You can use a Nintendo 64 emulator such as Project64 to run Nintendo 64 games on a Windows PC, but you need a separate game file or other game source. Project64 describes itself as a free, open-source Nintendo 64 and 64DD emulator for Windows; that description does not establish how well Banjo-Tooie works or which settings to use. The game was originally released on an N64 Game Pak, and its game data is separate from the emulator.
What you need to play Banjo-Tooie on PC
- A Windows PC and an N64 emulator. Project64’s project page describes it as free, open-source software for Nintendo 64 and 64DD, currently for Windows: Project64.
- A lawful source for the game data. The emulator is software; it is not the game itself. Banjo-Tooie originally came on a Nintendo 64 Game Pak, as identified in its instruction booklet.
- Optionally, a controller. No reliable Banjo-Tooie-specific controller configuration is established here, so expect to configure and test your own input device in the emulator.
How to set up an emulator
- Download Project64 from its official project page. Check the page for the current release and Windows support before installing.
- Install and open the emulator, then use its game-opening option to select a game file you are entitled to use. The exact menu labels can vary by release.
- If you use a controller, open Project64’s input or controller configuration and map the buttons to your device. Test the mapping in-game and adjust it if necessary; a specific working layout for Banjo-Tooie has not been verified.
- Start the game and adjust graphics or performance options only as needed for your setup. No game-specific graphics settings or performance guarantee are established for Banjo-Tooie.
Game files and legality
An emulator and a game file are distinct: the emulator runs software made for another system, while the game file contains the game’s data. Nintendo’s US support FAQ describes game files offered through peer-to-peer networks or third-party download links as unauthorized copies and states, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ expresses Nintendo’s position; it is not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal analysis. Owning a cartridge does not, by itself, establish that downloading a ROM is lawful in every location.
This article does not direct you to ROM download sites. Laws and rules around making or using game copies vary by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply where you live and use a game source you are legally entitled to use.
What is not established about Banjo-Tooie emulation
Project64’s general description does not confirm Banjo-Tooie compatibility, stable performance, the best emulator version, or ideal graphics and controller settings. Those details can depend on the emulator release, computer, game source, and input device. Avoid treating generic setup advice as a tested configuration for this specific game.

Official alternative: play the Xbox version
If you do not want to set up an N64 emulator, Xbox lists Banjo-Tooie for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and also lists Rare Replay as an option. The Xbox store listing says cloud play is available with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate, and that purchase is required to stream with Game Pass Essential. Availability, purchase terms, and subscription conditions may vary by region and can change; check the listing for your location.
