What is different between FireRed and LeafGreen?
The main choice is which Pokémon are exclusive to each version. The official material cited here does not provide a complete, authoritative list of those exclusives, so it cannot support naming specific species or declaring one version the better pick. Before buying, check a reliable complete list and choose the game that has the Pokémon you want.
Both games revisit Kanto, the region from Pokémon Red and Blue. Nintendo describes the Switch releases as remakes of the 2004 Game Boy Advance games, themselves based on the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, released in Japan in 1996. Nintendo also says players can encounter the original 151 Pokémon.
The remakes bring Game Boy Advance-era features such as abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and a choice of player-character gender. These shared features do not distinguish FireRed from LeafGreen.

How to choose the right version
Start with the Pokémon you want
If a particular exclusive matters to you, let that decide the purchase. Look up the full version-exclusive lists before choosing; the official descriptions linked below do not establish which species belong to which game.
Choose by release format
The current Switch editions are digital-only and sold separately. Nintendo announced them for release on February 27, 2026, on Nintendo Switch, with compatibility on Nintendo Switch 2. If you specifically want the original handheld release, you can look for a used 2004 Game Boy Advance cartridge instead. Check the seller, region, language, and authenticity carefully; a used cartridge is a legacy-media purchase, not a Switch version.

Account for multiplayer
For the Switch editions, Nintendo describes local multiplayer that does not require the Game Link Cable used in 2004. Its announcement says additional games and systems are required. The original Game Boy Advance games shipped with a wireless adapter, according to The Pokémon Company; that is a different arrangement from the Switch release.
Check language and regional price before purchase
Nintendo’s February 20, 2026 announcement listed a suggested price of $19.99 USD and English, French, and Spanish editions. Those are announcement details, not a guarantee of the current price or availability in every region. The language editions are separate, cannot be changed in-game, and the French and Spanish versions are EU French and EU Spanish. Confirm the price, region, and language on your local storefront before buying.

What about Pokémon HOME?
The Pokémon Company announced that the Switch versions would link with Pokémon HOME beginning in October 2026. That timing alone does not establish whether the feature is live now or what transfer restrictions apply. Check the current official Pokémon HOME instructions before relying on a transfer for your decision.

- You care most about a specific Pokémon: compare complete exclusives lists, then choose the version containing your preferred Pokémon.
- You want the most convenient current release: choose either Switch edition and buy the language version you want from your regional storefront.
- You want the original handheld experience: seek an authentic, appropriate-region Game Boy Advance cartridge.
- You expect to play with a friend: check that you have the additional games and systems Nintendo requires for Switch local multiplayer; the original GBA games used their included wireless adapter.
