For stronger Steam account protection, enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the Steam Mobile app, save its recovery code somewhere safe, and keep your phone number current if you want an additional recovery route. Steam Guard adds a second layer beyond your account name and password; it does not make an account invulnerable.
What Steam Guard adds to your account
Steam Guard is Steam’s additional security layer beyond your account name and password. With the mobile authenticator enabled, you can approve sign-ins in the app or enter a rotating code that changes every 30 seconds and can be used once. See Steam’s description of Steam Guard.
The mobile authenticator offers three sign-in flows: scan a Steam QR code and approve the attempt, respond to an approval notification after entering your credentials, or enter the current Steam Guard code. A QR approval displays details about the attempt, including a map and approximate location. Review those details before accepting; do not approve a sign-in you did not initiate.
Steam also offers Steam Guard codes by email. The mobile authenticator is more convenient for approving sign-ins in the app, but it makes planning for phone loss or replacement especially important.

Enable the mobile authenticator
- Install the official Steam Mobile app and sign in to your Steam account.
- Open Steam Guard and select Add Authenticator.
- If you want phone-number recovery options, add and verify your number when prompted. Steam says a phone number is not required to enable the authenticator.
- Write down the recovery code shown during setup and store it somewhere private and secure. Do not skip this step: it can help if you lose access to your authenticator.

Choose and verify your sign-in method
- QR sign-in: Scan the Steam QR code with the app, then inspect the sign-in details and approximate location before approving.
- Approval notification: Enter your account credentials and respond to the prompt in Steam Mobile. Approve only a sign-in you recognize.
- Current code: Enter the code displayed by Steam Guard when prompted. It changes every 30 seconds and is valid for one use.
Store backup codes and protect every code
You can generate backup codes from Account Details → Manage Steam Guard → Get Backup Codes. Steam requires an SMS code for this step and recommends printing the backup codes rather than storing them on a computer or taking a screenshot. Keep any printed copy private and secure.

Never share your password, authenticator code, SMS recovery or removal code, or backup codes. Steam says it will never ask you for your password or authenticator code, and advises using credentials and codes only on Valve-run sites. Treat unexpected links or requests to install software as suspicious; do not run programs suggested in unsolicited email or chat to “clean up” or “optimize” Steam.
Plan for a new phone or a lost authenticator
If you can still use the old authenticator
Install Steam Mobile on the new phone, sign in, and choose Move Authenticator. Steam says a transfer imposes a two-day trade and market restriction.

If the authenticator is unavailable but you have your registered number
In the app’s transfer flow, choose the option indicating that the authenticator is no longer accessible, then follow the SMS steps. The same two-day trade and market restriction applies after transfer.
If both the phone and authenticator are lost
If possible, contact your wireless provider to recover your phone number. If you also lack the recovery code, contact Steam Support to have the authenticator removed. Steam may ask for proof that you own the account, particularly if you cannot access its associated email.

For a lost or forgotten account, begin with Steam’s account recovery flow. If automatic recovery fails, follow the option to submit an intake form to Steam Support and provide as much proof of ownership as possible.

- Trades or market listings created before adding the mobile authenticator, or within the first seven days after adding it, are held for 15 days.
- Transferring the authenticator to another phone triggers a two-day trade and market restriction.
- Removing the authenticator triggers a 15-day period in which you cannot trade or sell items on the market.
Removing the authenticator also lowers account security and returns sign-in protection to emailed Steam Guard codes. Do not use removal as a casual troubleshooting step. If you need to remove it, follow Steam’s removal instructions and account for the consequences first.
