Gears of War: E-Day takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It tells the story of the Locust’s first emergence on Sera, with younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago confronting the invasion’s opening days.
When does E-Day happen?
The Coalition and Xbox place E-Day fourteen years before the events of the original Gears of War. That is the confirmed timeline relationship; it does not, on its own, establish where every other game, novel, or side story falls. The Coalition’s 2024 Xbox Wire interview and the official Xbox game page give the same interval.
What does E-Day depict?
E-Day is the beginning of the Locust invasion on Sera, not a later battle in the war already familiar from the original game. Marcus and Dom are soldiers with experience from the Pendulum Wars, the human conflict that preceded the Locust War; what is new is the Locust threat.
The Coalition describes the game as a new mainline entry set earlier in the story, rather than a detached spin-off. Creative Director Matt Searcy says it explores the beginnings of Marcus and Dom’s bond: “We’re telling the origin story of Marcus and Dom and their bond… this is the bond that defines the franchise,” he said in the 2024 Xbox Wire interview.

Where does it fit beyond the original game?
The official material establishes E-Day’s position relative to the first Gears of War, but does not provide a complete ordering of the franchise’s games and other fiction. Treat the fourteen-year gap as the reliable anchor rather than using it to infer an exhaustive series chronology.
A 2026 Xbox Wire feature identifies Kalona as the city where E-Day takes place. That identifies a setting, not proof that every event in the game or the entire conflict is confined to one city.
