Steam does not document a general spending cap that adults can set for their own accounts. You can track purchases in your account history, use a fixed Steam Wallet balance as a budgeting aid, and—if you manage a child’s account—require an adult to approve purchase requests through Steam Families.
How to view your Steam purchase history
- Sign in to the Steam Client or the Steam Help Site.
- Select your account name in the upper-right corner, then open Account Details.
- Select View purchase history.
- Open a transaction to review its details or, where appropriate, start a support or refund request.
For an unfamiliar charge, Steam recommends comparing the purchase-history total with the bank statement or invoice. The amounts can differ: depending on your country and payment provider, the provider may add processing fees, taxes, or currency-conversion charges. Steam says it does not control those charges.
Can you set a spending limit on your Steam account?
The reviewed Steam account documentation does not describe a general self-service setting that caps an adult’s own purchases by month, transaction, or total spend. Steam’s “limited user spend” page is not a personal budgeting control: it tracks progress toward the $5 USD qualifying-spend threshold for access to certain community features.
Steam says qualifying spend can include adding at least $5 USD equivalent to the Steam Wallet or buying Store games for that value. Retail activation keys, free demos, promotional trials, and money from items sold on the Community Market do not count. Purchases still pending or processing count only after they are successfully processed. If your Store currency is not USD, Steam converts qualifying spend at the daily exchange rate in effect when each purchase is made. A bank refund or payment dispute can reduce the qualifying total; a refund to the Steam Wallet does not change access to the community features. Use your Steam Wallet balance as a budgeting aid
Your current Wallet balance appears beside your profile name. To add funds, open Account Details and select +Add funds to your Steam Wallet. Wallet funds can cover future purchases, but Steam says they cannot be transferred or gifted to another Steam account. A set Wallet balance can help you keep track of money you have made available for purchases, but it is not a documented account-wide spending cap.
Steam continues to offer digital gift cards. Its Steam Wallet help page says physical retail Steam Gift Cards are being phased out, with retailers expected to run out of stock by the end of 2026. That is a time-sensitive availability statement; check the page for current details.

Set up purchase approval for a child with Steam Families
Steam Families offers a purchase gate for child accounts: a child can request that an adult family member pay for the child’s shopping cart. The adult can approve and pay using a mobile device or email, and approved games are added to the child’s account. Steam does not document this as a configurable dollar budget; it is an approval workflow for requested carts.
- Open Account Details and select Family Management.
- Create or manage a Steam Family.
- Assign the child account the child role and configure the available parental controls.
- Review purchase requests and choose whether to approve and pay for a cart.
Steam Families also includes store restrictions, game-access permissions, playtime limits, and playtime reports for child accounts. Steam’s guide says a family can contain up to six members. Review a regretted purchase or request a refund
Steam’s standard refund rule for a game is that the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the game has been played for less than two hours. To submit a request:
- Sign in to Steam Help and select Purchases.
- Choose the purchase and identify the issue.
- Select I’d like to request a refund and follow the prompts.
Steam says you can still submit a request for review if a purchase falls outside the standard rule, but that does not guarantee approval. See How To Request A Refund for the policy and current process.
