Start by launching Batman: Arkham Knight with every mod, graphics tweak, overlay, and recording tool disabled. If the game still crashes, investigate the game installation, drivers, settings, and background software; if it runs, re-enable changes one at a time to narrow down the trigger. Warner Bros. specifically warns that compatibility between game patches and third-party tools that modify files is not guaranteed.
Record what happens before changing files
Note when the failure occurs: at launch, while loading, in a particular scene, or after a visual change. Record your storefront, each installed mod and its version, and any recent game or graphics-driver updates. Back up your saves and custom configuration before removing files or resetting settings.
A Steam Community post from around 2018 asked how to fix crashing graphical mods, including Resorep, but that user-generated report is not an authoritative diagnosis or evidence that a specific mod is responsible. Treat the timing of your own crash as a clue, not proof.
Test the game with mods and overlays disabled
Temporarily disable every mod and graphics-changing tool, then turn off overlays, FPS counters, and recording software. Warner Bros. support recommends disabling third-party tools or tweaks that adjust game graphics and game-overlay programs because they can conflict with the game: WB’s Arkham Knight troubleshooting guidance.

Launch the unmodified game and check the same scene or action that previously caused the crash. If it still fails, a mod is not necessary to reproduce the problem; proceed to the non-mod checks below. If it runs normally, you have a useful baseline for isolating the changes you disabled.
Re-enable changes one at a time
- Check the mod author’s current instructions and compatibility notes for your game version before reinstalling or enabling anything.
- Enable one mod or graphics tool, restart the game, and repeat the same trigger that previously caused the failure.
- Continue with one change at a time. If the crash returns after a particular change, disable it again and repeat the check to see whether the result is consistent.
This is a diagnostic approach based on WB’s recommendation to disable graphics tools and overlays; WB does not prescribe a mod manager or say that this procedure proves a mod is defective. A failure after one change narrows the suspect, but does not identify the exact cause. Mods can also interact, and compatibility should not be assumed after a game update.

WB’s October 30, 2015 PC update warned: “Please note that we cannot guarantee compatibility between patches when using 3rd party tools that modify the game files.” That is a historical publisher warning, not a current compatibility assessment of any particular mod: WB’s archived PC update on Steam.
Reset configuration and verify Steam files if appropriate
If you use the Steam version, WB’s documented recovery sequence is to close the game, remove its configuration folder, verify the installed files through Steam, and relaunch. Back up any user-made settings first: removing the configuration folder resets those files.

- Close Batman: Arkham Knight.
- In the game’s installation folder, locate and remove
BMGame/Config. - In Steam, open the game’s properties and run the option to verify the integrity of its files. Exact tab and button wording may vary as the Steam client changes.
- Relaunch the game and check whether the failure remains.
WB documents this configuration reset on its Arkham Knight support page. Its archived patch announcement also advises removing the BMGame Config folder and verifying the Steam cache when modified configuration files cause launch or performance problems: October 30, 2015 PC update. Verification checks installation integrity; it does not identify which mod caused a crash.
Check other causes if the clean game still crashes
WB’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking several non-mod causes. Change one relevant setting at a time where practical, so you can tell whether the result changes:

- Lower graphics settings to see whether the game becomes more stable.
- Check for current video and sound drivers. If the issue began after a driver update, consider rolling back that driver.
- Check Windows for DirectX updates.
- Return overclocked components to their manufacturer settings.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined a game file, and close unnecessary background applications.
These checks, along with disabling graphics tools and overlays, are described in WB’s Arkham Knight troubleshooting guidance. A crash that persists with mods and overlays disabled merits checking these broader causes rather than assuming a mod is at fault.

If the problem continues, report the crash timing, exact error text, storefront, mod names and versions, recent game or driver changes, and what happened with all mods disabled. Steam’s Arkham Knight product support page links to official WB support as well as community discussions and guides. Community posts can offer leads, but an old workaround is not confirmation that the fix is safe or still applies.
