In the United States, the ESRB label combines an age-suitability category with content descriptors and separate notices about online or interactive features. Labels differ by country and storefront, so parents elsewhere should use the rating system shown in their region.
What do video game age ratings mean?
For U.S. games, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) uses three kinds of information. Read them together, because each answers a different question.
- Rating Category: A suggested age-suitability threshold. It is guidance, not a guarantee that every child of that age is ready for or will enjoy the game.
- Content Descriptors: Labels for content parents may want to know about, including content relevant to the assigned category. Descriptors are applied in context and are not a complete list of everything in a game.
- Interactive Elements: Notices about features such as online interaction, purchases, random-item purchases, location sharing, or unrestricted internet access. These features may matter to a family, but they do not determine the age rating.
ESRB’s rating guide explains that content descriptors are relative to the category and are not intended as a complete content listing. It likewise says interactive or online features may be of interest or concern but do not influence the rating assignment.
What do the ESRB age categories indicate?
The current U.S. ESRB categories are Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+, and Adults Only 18+. The age language indicates general suitability thresholds, not a personal recommendation for every child. ESRB describes Everyone as generally suitable for all ages, Everyone 10+ for ages 10 and up, Teen for ages 13 and up, and Mature for ages 17 and up. Adults Only is the category for adults 18 and older. Consult the current ESRB guide for the category descriptions and examples.

What does E10+ mean?
Everyone 10+ (E10+) means ESRB considers the game generally suitable for ages 10 and up. It does not mean that every 10-year-old will be comfortable with every element; check the descriptors and any fuller rating information for the specific title.
Are video game ratings the same in every country?
No. ESRB is the system commonly used for games in the United States, while other regions display their own authorities’ classifications. The labels, age bands, and legal force can differ, so an ESRB number or word should not be translated mechanically into a PEGI or other regional label. The International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) definitions show, for example, that Australia’s M classification is recommended for people aged 15 and over but is not legally restricted, while MA 15+ is legally restricted to people aged 15 and over, with an adult-accompaniment exception for younger children.

IARC offers a streamlined rating process for digital games and apps on participating storefronts and in participating regions. Its process can provide the relevant participating authority’s regional rating; it does not make all rating systems identical.
Where can I find out what’s actually in a game?
- Check the listing or package. For a physical game, look at the front and back of the box. For a digital game, check the storefront page before buying or installing.
- Read the category and descriptors together. Focus on the kinds of content that matter to your family rather than treating the age category as a complete review.
- Check Interactive Elements separately. Look for notices such as Users Interact, In-Game Purchases, In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items), Shares Location, and Unrestricted Internet.
- Search the title through ESRB. The ESRB ratings lookup can provide a Rating Summary when one is available. Many physical games have summaries with more context; digitally assigned IARC-rated games and apps do not receive ESRB Rating Summaries through that digital process.
- Investigate remaining family-specific questions. A trustworthy review or gameplay footage can help clarify details that a rating label does not settle.
Does a rating tell me if a game has online chat or loot boxes?
Not through the age category alone. ESRB’s Interactive Elements identify certain online, purchase, and connectivity features, including user interaction and random-item purchases. They are separate from the category and content descriptors, and they do not change the age rating. Look for these notices on the package or storefront listing, then check the game’s settings and platform controls for the specific interaction options available.

How are video game ratings assigned?
Physical retail games
ESRB says publishers submit a completed content questionnaire and video footage showing typical gameplay, missions, cutscenes, and the most extreme content. At least three trained raters review the footage and recommend a category, descriptors, and interactive elements; the recommendation is evaluated and confirmed. A publisher can accept the rating or revise the game and resubmit it. ESRB may play-test a game after release to verify that its content disclosure was complete.
Digital games and apps
For digital games, developers complete an IARC-developed questionnaire before release. The process assigns a category, content descriptors, and interactive elements for participating rating authorities and storefronts. ESRB says ratings may be monitored and tested after release and adjusted when necessary. A questionnaire-based process is not a guarantee that a label captures every detail a particular family wants to know.

Downloadable content
In most cases, the base game’s rating applies to its downloadable content (DLC). If an add-on exceeds the core game’s rating, ESRB says it must be submitted and may receive a different rating.
These processes differ by distribution type; for more detail, see the ESRB ratings process.

How can parents use ratings to make a decision?
Start with the information that maps to your child and household rather than relying on a symbol alone. The category offers a broad age-suitability signal; descriptors help identify content to investigate; Interactive Elements flag features that may affect privacy, spending, or contact with other players.
ESRB credits Hart Research Associates with finding that 83% of parents whose children play video games were aware of ESRB ratings, and 77% regularly checked them before buying a game. These figures describe parents with children who play games, not all parents. Separately, ESRB reports that E and E10+ made up 65% of ratings it assigned to physical and console-downloadable games in 2024; that is a share of ratings assigned, not of all games available or played. See ESRB’s parent tools for its guidance and credited figures.
After checking a game, talk with your child about household expectations for play, spending, and communication. Device parental controls can help set available rating restrictions, play-time limits, purchase controls, and internet restrictions. The exact options and setup steps depend on the console, computer, or other device; use the device maker’s current instructions. ESRB notes that parental controls are available on virtually all game devices.
