Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up as a direct-action adventure built around independently controlled attacks and defenses, while Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is an RPG with a different combat format. The story contrast is just as specific: Makoto Daito’s announced saga spans five Japanese cities and eras from 1915 to 1965, whereas Infinite Wealth follows its own protagonist and story. “Like a Dragon” covers games with different formats, so the comparison below names the installment whenever that distinction matters.
Which Like a Dragon game is the comparison?
There is no single combat system or shared plot that describes every Like a Dragon game. SEGA’s catalog categorizes Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth as an RPG and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii as an action-adventure. That makes Infinite Wealth a useful foil for the turn-based-RPG contrast, but it would be inaccurate to say the whole series is turn-based. SEGA’s catalog and genre listings show the difference.
For the action-combat comparison, producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto has also discussed Stranger Than Heaven against Yakuza-style button-driven fighting. That is his design framing, not an objective description of every entry or a claim that Infinite Wealth plays the same way. GamesRadar’s September 2026 preview quotes Sakamoto saying the new combat was intended to be “more intuitive and more rough.”

Independent left- and right-side actions
SEGA says Makoto can use his left and right sides independently to attack and defend. The announced system includes catching an enemy’s attack with one hand and countering with the other, as well as weapons such as knives, hammers, and swords. Xbox Wire’s hands-on demo preview describes shoulder and trigger controls for left- and right-sided light and heavy attacks, alongside blocks, parries, dodges, and grapples. Action-focused, but not a final verdict on feel
The announced emphasis is on reacting and coordinating attacks with defense, rather than selecting turns in an RPG battle. Xbox Wire’s preview also mentions tackles, pins, and flurries. Those examples give a clearer sense of the intended physical, close-range combat, but they do not establish how the full game’s difficulty, balance, or final controls will feel.
Against Infinite Wealth, the cleanest distinction is format: SEGA lists it as an RPG, while Stranger Than Heaven has been presented with real-time, direct-action combat. Against action-adventure entries such as Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, the distinction is less about action versus turns and more about the specific control concept announced for Makoto. The available information does not establish a full one-to-one mechanical comparison with those games.

How do the stories differ?
Makoto’s five-decade journey
Stranger Than Heaven opens in San Francisco in 1915, where a young man slips aboard a suspicious ship. Its protagonist, Makoto Daito, is the son of an American father and Japanese mother. After losing his parents and becoming isolated, he travels to Japan in search of a better life. SEGA frames the story as a struggle to find a place to call home; the full plot and ending have not been disclosed. SEGA’s May 7, 2026 announcement sets out that premise.
The announced saga covers five eras and cities over five decades: 1915 Kokura, Fukuoka; 1929 Kure, Hiroshima; 1943 Minami, Osaka; 1951 Atami, Shizuoka; and 1965 Shinjuku, Tokyo. The locations and time span come from the official Xbox listing. This is the scale of the announced structure, not evidence that the game offers a historically exact account of those places.

One named Like a Dragon story, not the whole franchise
Infinite Wealth is an individual RPG entry, not a stand-in for every Like a Dragon plot. The official catalog establishes that the franchise contains separate titles and genre categories, but the available material here does not support a single umbrella synopsis for all their stories. The useful contrast is therefore between Makoto’s announced multi-decade journey and a specific Like a Dragon game’s own narrative, rather than claiming the two franchises have one-to-one story structures.
What does music and showman work add?
Combat is not the only announced activity shaping Makoto’s progression. SEGA describes his musical talent developing into showman work. Xbox Wire’s September 2026 feature says players collect sounds in the world and combine them into tracks, scout performers based on street rumors, and arrange performances, including casts, lighting, and staging. This positions making shows as part of Makoto’s career and story, alongside fighting; it does not establish that such activities replace other familiar side content. When and where is Stranger Than Heaven due?
As listed by Xbox on October 4, 2026, Stranger Than Heaven was scheduled for January 15, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S and Windows, with Game Pass availability displayed. SEGA’s May announcement also named Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5.
