For most newcomers, Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the simplest place to start: Capcom USA staff call it “a great jumping-on point for the series.” If you want the classic fixed-camera survival-horror format, try the 2002 remake of Resident Evil. For Resident Evil 4, the 2005 original and 2023 remake are both worth considering for different reasons; playing both is optional, not a prerequisite for following the series.
Should you play the Resident Evil originals or remakes?
Choose by the experience you want, rather than assuming a remake is a universal replacement for its original. The differences vary by game: the enhanced 2002 Resident Evil offers control options while retaining the classic design, Resident Evil 2 (2019) changes aspects of presentation and structure, and Capcom says Resident Evil 4 (2023) reworks the story.
- New to the series: Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019), Capcom USA staff’s recommendation for new players. Capcom’s guide is dated October 18, 2024.
- Want classic fixed-camera survival horror: Consider the 2002 Resident Evil remake, which preserves the original-style experience while offering refinements and, in the enhanced release Capcom described, a modern movement option.
- Interested in how a landmark game was reshaped: Play both versions of Resident Evil 4. The original offers its 2005 design; the remake revises the story and gameplay experience.
- Just want to follow the series: You do not need to play every original and remake. The sources do not establish a requirement to experience both versions to understand the series.
Which Resident Evil game should you play first?
For an accessible starting recommendation, choose Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom USA staff wrote, “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” That is Capcom staff’s recommendation, not a claim that it is the only valid entry point.
If your main interest is the older survival-horror structure, the 2002 Resident Evil remake is another reasonable starting choice. Its fixed-camera roots and available control choices make it relevant to players curious about the series’ classic form. The original 1996 game may interest players seeking the series’ beginnings, but access to every regional version is not established here.

How does the 2002 Resident Evil remake compare with the 1996 original?
Capcom describes the 2002 release as a re-imagined take on the PlayStation original, with refined gameplay, graphics and sound. In an announcement about an enhanced release dated August 5, 2014, Capcom said players could retain tank controls or select modern analog movement. It also described a scrolling camera option that adapts the original 4:3 presentation to a 16:9 view, with settings adjustable in-game. These options make the remake a practical choice for players who want the classic structure with refinements, without suggesting that every detail is unchanged.

What changes between Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 2 (2019)?
Capcom’s comparison documents changes beyond visual presentation. For example, a location encountered early in the original appears later in the remake, and Ada is depicted differently. These examples show that the remake reshapes elements of the experience, but they do not amount to a complete account of every scenario, route or campaign difference. If your decision is which version to start with, Capcom USA staff recommend the 2019 game for newcomers. If you are specifically interested in how the earlier game’s design was reinterpreted, the 1998 original offers the direct point of comparison; access to particular original editions can vary.

What can you say about Resident Evil 3 (1999) versus Resident Evil 3 (2020)?
The available official information here confirms the modern Resident Evil 3 release date and platforms, but it does not establish a detailed original-versus-remake content comparison. That is not enough to make precise claims about cuts, pacing or comparative quality. Treat the 2020 game as one of the modern remakes, and check the relevant regional store listing for current platform and edition availability.
Is Resident Evil 4 remake different from the original?
Yes. Capcom identifies Resident Evil 4 (2023) as a remake of the 2005 game and said in its June 3, 2022 announcement that the remake reworks the story and aims to provide a fresh gameplay experience. In 2025, Capcom described the reimagined gameplay as carefully preserving the original’s appeal. Together, those statements support a measured comparison: the remake updates and reshapes the experience while retaining elements the company considers central to the original’s appeal. They do not establish every specific combat, camera, pacing or content change.

Choose the 2005 original if you want its original design, or the 2023 remake if you want the reworked version. Playing both is most useful if you want to compare design and narrative changes; it is not necessary simply to understand the series. Capcom’s announcements describe the 2023 remake and its later sales milestone.

What do the sales figures tell you?
Capcom reported that Resident Evil 4 remake had sold more than 10 million units worldwide by December 31, 2024, roughly two years after its 2023 release. The same April 25, 2025 announcement reported cumulative sales of more than 167 million units for the Resident Evil series as of that date. These are commercial sales measures, not evidence that one version is artistically superior.
