You can A/B test a YouTube thumbnail in YouTube Studio on a computer: open an eligible video, choose Thumbnail → Test & compare, upload up to three meaningfully different options, and select Done. YouTube shows the options concurrently and evaluates them by watch-time share—not just click-through rate. A test can take a few days or up to two weeks, and it may end without a clear winner.
Check whether your channel and video are eligible
YouTube’s Test & Compare guidance says the feature is available in YouTube Studio on a computer, and your channel must have advanced features enabled.
- Eligible: public long-form videos and podcast episodes. A Premiere can be tested after it ends and becomes a long-form video.
- Not eligible: private videos, videos marked made for kids, videos set for mature audiences, and Shorts. If a video transitions to a Short, any existing thumbnail test for it is no longer accessible.
If the option is missing, first check the video’s visibility and format, then verify that advanced features are enabled for your channel.
Prepare the thumbnail options
Use up to three options that differ enough for viewers to respond to them differently. You could vary the composition, background, text overlay, or placement of the main subject. Changing only a tiny detail may leave the test with little evidence to distinguish the versions.

Use suitable dimensions and files
YouTube recommends using the highest resolution available. For Test & Compare, if even one thumbnail is below 720p (1280 × 720), YouTube downscales all options in that experiment to 480p (854 × 480). Its general custom-thumbnail guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and JPG or PNG files; the minimum listed width is 640 pixels. YouTube lists a desktop upload limit of 50 MB for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails. Limits can vary by device, so follow the upload screen if it gives a different limit.
Thumbnail content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. A violating thumbnail may be rejected and can lead to strikes or loss of thumbnail privileges. See YouTube’s custom thumbnail guidance for current requirements.

Start the experiment in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio. For a new video, use Create to upload it; for an existing one, open Content and select the video.
- In the video’s thumbnail section, choose Test & compare.
- Upload up to three thumbnail images, then select Done. For a new upload, the test starts when you publish the video.
You can stop an active test and manually select a thumbnail. Do not change the video’s title or thumbnail while the experiment is running: doing so stops the test, and you will need to restart it.
Understand what Test & Compare measures
YouTube runs the options concurrently, so viewers see alternatives during the same period rather than in separate sequential blocks. It evaluates each option by its share of watch time. The goal is not merely to attract clicks: a useful thumbnail should set an accurate expectation for the video and bring in viewers who continue watching. YouTube may keep a small share of traffic out of the experiment as a control group. Those viewers see the default thumbnail, and their performance is excluded from the experiment calculations.
Read the result without overclaiming
Results appear in Studio when they are ready. YouTube also directs creators to review experiment reporting in the video’s Reach analytics area. The labels describe how confidently the experiment separated the options:

A test may take a few days or as long as two weeks. YouTube identifies impression volume, how recently the video was published, and how different the options are as factors affecting how long it takes. Similar designs can take longer to distinguish, and limited impressions can make a decisive result less likely. YouTube says it is normal not to receive a Winner.

Base your decision on watch-time share, the metric Test & Compare uses, rather than treating click-through rate alone as the verdict. YouTube Analytics has a separate impressions report: it counts a thumbnail impression when it is visible for more than one second and at least 50% of it is on screen. External websites and apps, YouTube mobile web, notifications, and other excluded surfaces do not count toward that impression metric. That report can help explain broader channel traffic, but it does not replace the experiment’s watch-time-share comparison. Details are in YouTube’s impressions and watch-time guidance.

A result describes the tested video and the audience reached during that experiment. It does not establish a universal design rule: audiences change, and repeated tests can vary through ordinary statistical variation. There is no guaranteed increase in views, click-through rate, or watch time from using the feature.
Troubleshoot common Test & Compare problems
- “Test & compare” is unavailable: Confirm you are using Studio on a computer, your channel has advanced features, and the video is public long-form or an eligible podcast episode. Private, made-for-kids, mature-audience videos, and Shorts are excluded.
- The test stopped unexpectedly: Check whether the title or thumbnail was changed during the experiment. YouTube says either change stops the test; restart it after choosing the details you want to keep.
- There is no Winner: This is a normal possible outcome. The test may lack enough impressions to distinguish options, or the options may be too similar. A Preferred result signals less certainty than a Winner; None means no strong difference was detected.
- The experiment is taking a long time: YouTube says results can take a few days to two weeks, depending in part on impressions, publication recency, and how distinct the images are. Avoid reading an unfinished test as a verdict.
- Images look lower-resolution in the test: Check that every option is at least 720p (1280 × 720). If any is below that, all options in the test are downscaled to 480p (854 × 480).
