Which Resident Evil game should you play first?
Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019) if you want the most broadly suitable introduction: a modernized take on the classic survival-horror style and an early foothold in the series’ story. Capcom USA staff put it plainly: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” Capcom’s recommendation is practical advice, not a claim that one game suits every player; PlayStation’s series guide likewise notes that the best starting point depends on what you want from the games.
Choose by perspective, play feel, and story

Pick Resident Evil 7: Biohazard for first-person horror
PlayStation describes Resident Evil 7 as a new beginning for the series and highlights its first-person perspective. It is a strong choice if that viewpoint and a new protagonist sound more appealing than starting with the series’ classic style. Capcom USA staff also called it especially scary, but that is a staff impression, not an objective ranking of the games.
Pick the Resident Evil 4 remake for Leon and more action
The remake is a sensible alternative if Leon Kennedy is your main draw or you prefer a more action-forward rescue story. Its story takes place after Resident Evil 2, so playing the latter first gives you an earlier point in Leon’s journey, but the recommendation does not require you to complete every intervening game.

A simple route after your first game
For a compact route through connected stories, play Resident Evil 2 and then Resident Evil 4. After that, choose the branch that interests you:
- Ethan Winters’ story: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard → Resident Evil Village. Capcom describes Village as a sequel to the seventh installment. Capcom’s 2025 integrated report discusses the series and its entries.
- A broader mainline route: Continue through the numbered releases, adding spin-offs when you are interested rather than treating them as prerequisites.
This is not a complete chronology. PlayStation’s guide places Resident Evil Revelations between 4 and 5, and Revelations 2 between 5 and 6, while treating them as offshoot stories. You can try a later entry without first finishing every numbered game and spin-off.

Does a newcomer need to catch up before Resident Evil Requiem?
No official source cited here says that newcomers must complete earlier games first. Capcom identifies Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment, released on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Its 2025 report describes a story set in Raccoon City that engages with the series’ broader lore, so prior familiarity may add context without being established as a requirement. Capcom reported 174 million cumulative franchise game sales as of June 30, 2025. That is a dated company-reported total, not a 2026 figure. The scale helps explain why there is no need to treat the whole catalogue as a checklist: choose a starting game that matches your preferred style, then follow the characters or stories you want to explore.
