Amazon S3 does not ingest or encode a live feed. To stream live video using S3, use an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive to ingest and encode the feed, store the resulting HLS segments and manifest in S3, then deliver them to viewers through Amazon CloudFront. AWS documents this architecture as a deployable CloudFormation solution.
In other words, “streaming from S3” means using S3 as the media origin—not asking S3 to create a live stream. AWS’s solution overview describes the workflow; its architecture details explain the service roles.
Can Amazon S3 stream live video?
Not by itself. S3 stores objects; it does not accept a camera feed as a live encoder or turn that feed into a playback stream. In AWS’s S3-based live-streaming design, MediaLive handles ingestion and transcoding, S3 stores the encoded HLS media segments and manifest, and CloudFront distributes those objects to viewers.
AWS states in its CloudFront documentation: “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” See Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront.

- Choose the source connection and MediaLive input. The S3 solution lists
RTP_PUSH,RTMP_PUSH,URL_PULL, andINPUT_DEVICE. Use the input type that matches the source protocol and how it is reachable. AWS Elemental Link is an option for device input, but it is not required for every workflow. - Check network reachability. For a push input, MediaLive uses an input security group that admits a specified source IP range. Confirm the source address, firewall rules, and network path before configuring the channel. A pull input instead needs a reachable source URL.
- Configure MediaLive to ingest and encode. Set up the channel for the incoming feed and the intended output. The reference solution describes one adaptive-bitrate HLS output; choose output settings appropriate to the source and playback requirements rather than assuming every MediaLive workflow has the same profile.
- Deploy the S3-based solution. Follow the AWS solution’s CloudFormation deployment instructions, and verify that the selected AWS Region supports MediaLive. If using an Elemental Link device, use the Region where that device is configured.
- Configure CloudFront for live HLS delivery. Point the distribution at the S3 origin endpoints and set live-appropriate cache behaviors for manifests and media segments. CloudFront’s guidance uses distinct path patterns according to format and file extensions; follow the guidance for the actual output paths rather than copying a behavior intended for another packaging format.
- Test playback through CloudFront. Confirm that the manifest and referenced segments load, that a player can advance as new segments arrive, and that the distribution is not serving an outdated manifest. Test with the access controls and HTTPS behavior intended for viewers.
- Monitor the deployed workflow. Use the AWS services and logs included or referenced by the solution to investigate operational issues across MediaLive, S3, and CloudFront.
CloudFront settings that matter for live content
Separate manifest and segment behaviors
A manifest changes during a live event as new media becomes available, while media segments are separate objects. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guidance configures separate cache behaviors for manifests and media segments, with path patterns based on the format and file extensions. Match those patterns to the paths your origin actually serves.
Keep live manifests fresh
AWS’s examples set the minimum TTL to five seconds or less to help prevent CloudFront from serving stale live content. This is an example-specific live-delivery setting, not a universal guarantee of end-to-end latency. Choose cache policies with the freshness requirements and origin behavior of your workflow in mind.

Forward query strings only when the workflow needs them
Some MediaPackage workflows use query strings that CloudFront must forward. AWS identifies start and end for time-shifted viewing, and aws.manifestfilter for manifest filtering. Its HLS and CMAF examples also include an m query string that represents MediaPackage endpoint modification time. These are feature-dependent: do not apply them blindly to an S3-origin workflow that does not use those MediaPackage features.
Use HTTPS and protect the origin appropriately
AWS recommends redirecting viewers to HTTPS in its CloudFront procedure. The S3 reference solution also documents access restrictions for its website bucket and fine-grained permissions through IAM. Treat those as parts of that solution, not proof that every media object in a different deployment is protected automatically. Set access controls for the actual origin and intended audience.

When to use S3 directly and when to consider MediaPackage
The S3 design is a fit when MediaLive has already produced the format needed for playback and S3 can serve as the segment origin. AWS’s broader CloudFront guidance also describes MediaPackage as a packaging and origin option when a workflow needs multiple delivery formats or MediaPackage features.
| Decision area | S3 as segment origin | MediaPackage-based workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | MediaLive has produced the HLS output needed, and the workflow needs S3 to store and originate its segments. | The workflow needs multiple output formats or MediaPackage packaging features. |
| Playback and packaging | Use the output formats the encoder and S3-origin workflow provide. | Consider when its packaging and origin capabilities meet requirements that a straightforward S3 origin does not. |
| CloudFront configuration | Configure behaviors for the S3-origin paths and live objects. | Account for the MediaPackage endpoint and any feature-dependent query strings that must be forwarded. |
| Cost and operations | Estimate the actual encoding, storage, request, and delivery workload. | Estimate the actual services and workload required for the packaging workflow; no option is universally cheaper. |
These are workflow choices, not interchangeable labels. Compare the formats and devices you need to support, latency and cache freshness, access control, operational complexity, and expected workload before choosing. See AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guidance and CloudFront’s video streaming overview.

Region, security, and cost checks before launch
- Region support: MediaLive is available only in specified AWS Regions. Verify current availability before choosing a deployment Region; an Elemental Link source must be used in the Region where that device is configured. AWS lists this among the solution’s design considerations.
- Access design: Decide who can retrieve manifests and segments, how viewers authenticate if needed, and how to prevent unintended direct access to the origin. Do not rely on a sample website-bucket restriction as a substitute for reviewing media-origin permissions.
- Cost estimation: AWS identifies encoded profile, stream bitrate, and number of viewers as cost drivers. Estimate the actual MediaLive channel, S3 storage and requests, and CloudFront delivery workload; the documentation does not establish one universal price for this architecture.
- Operational visibility: Review CloudTrail and logs from MediaLive, S3, and CloudFront as applicable when diagnosing deployment or delivery behavior.
Troubleshooting common S3 live-streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| MediaLive does not receive the source | Input type or network path | Confirm the source protocol matches the configured push or pull input. For push, check that the source IP is admitted by the input security group and can reach the input endpoint. |
| Playback starts but stops or fails to advance | Manifest freshness or segment availability | Check that new segments are being produced and are reachable through CloudFront. Review the manifest cache behavior and minimum TTL; AWS’s live examples use five seconds or less. |
| CloudFront returns missing objects | Origin paths or cache behavior patterns | Compare the requested manifest and segment paths with the S3 object paths and the distribution’s path patterns. Make sure the behavior for each format and extension routes to the intended origin. |
| Playback is stale or does not reflect new segments | Cache policy or query-string handling | Check manifest caching first. If the workflow uses MediaPackage time-shift or manifest filtering, verify that the relevant start, end, or aws.manifestfilter query strings are forwarded as required. |
| Viewers cannot access the stream | HTTPS, permissions, or viewer authorization | Check the CloudFront viewer protocol behavior, origin access configuration, S3 permissions, and any authentication rules together; a restrictive bucket policy can block legitimate playback if it does not match the distribution design. |
| The planned deployment cannot be created in a Region | Regional service availability | Verify current MediaLive availability and, if applicable, that the Elemental Link device is being used in its configured Region. |
