You can run a prerecorded playlist as a 24/7 YouTube live stream without OBS by using FFmpeg on an always-on Linux VPS. FFmpeg sends the files to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room; a systemd service can restart FFmpeg if it exits. You still need to monitor YouTube’s stream health: a running process alone does not prove the broadcast is reaching viewers.

Before you set up the VPS

Make sure the channel can go live

YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the streamer be at least 16. Enabling a channel’s first live stream may take up to 24 hours, so do that before planning the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming restrictions and requirements.

Check rights and YouTube rules

Every video, image, song, and other element in the stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to use each item; whether a particular playlist is licensed cannot be determined from the streaming setup. A continuous playlist is not exempt from copyright rules or YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies.

Choose and test the files

Use media that you have the right to stream. Check that each file plays, has the intended audio, and uses codecs and settings compatible with your planned output. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely, but a playlist of separate files needs its own sequencing strategy. Test the complete sequence—including transitions, differing durations, and audio changes—before going live.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, then open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key provided there. Prefer the RTMPS URL: YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected with TLS/SSL. The ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default, so check the selected protocol rather than assuming the displayed address is encrypted. See YouTube’s encoder connection guidance.
  3. Keep the key private. Store it in a protected configuration file or secret store readable only by the account that runs FFmpeg. Do not put it in a public repository, share it in a screenshot, or leave it in a command or log that other server users can read.

Use the exact URL and key shown for your stream. If an SSL connection error occurs, verify that the address uses rtmps; YouTube notes that specifying port 443 may help in some configurations.

Choose how FFmpeg handles the media

Stream copy for compatible files

FFmpeg’s -c copy passes the compressed video and audio through without re-encoding. It can reduce encoding work on the VPS, but it is suitable only when the source streams are compatible with the intended output and YouTube ingest settings. It does not make incompatible codecs, timestamps, frame rates, or other properties compatible. FFmpeg documents stream looping and stream copy options.

Re-encode when the source needs normalization

If the files do not fit the output you intend to send, re-encode them with FFmpeg. This provides control over codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio format, but uses VPS CPU. Test with a representative file and monitor CPU use before relying on the VPS for continuous encoding; no particular VPS capacity is established here.

Use YouTube’s ingest settings as the target

YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Its guidance is updated on its own settings page; consult the current encoder settings when configuring FFmpeg. Unless you have a reason to use a manual stream key, YouTube recommends letting Live Control Room detect resolution and frame rate.

Set resolution and bitrate for the connection

Pick a resolution and frame rate, then choose a bitrate the VPS network can sustain continuously. For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations include:

Output Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not guarantees about a VPS plan or its available upload capacity. Test the server’s upload connection and use audio and motion representative of the actual stream. YouTube recommends a speed test and checking stream health and messages in Live Control Room. See its bitrate and resolution recommendations.

Run FFmpeg and verify the preview

Build the FFmpeg invocation around your files, chosen encoding approach, and the exact YouTube URL and key. For an input that can be sent as-is, the core looping option is -stream_loop -1; for compatible compressed streams, -c copy avoids re-encoding. If you re-encode, set the chosen video and audio codecs, output size, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval to match your tested target. Playlist files and timestamps can behave differently, so there is no single command that is safe to claim for every media set.

  1. Run the command manually first, using the protected key configuration rather than exposing the key publicly.
  2. Open Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview and stream-health status. Confirm the picture, sound, resolution, and frame rate before treating the setup as ready.
  3. Let the full playlist sequence run long enough to catch file transitions, looping behavior, audio gaps, and any timestamp or ingest errors.
  4. Only after the manual run behaves as expected, configure the same working invocation to run under a Linux service manager.

Keep FFmpeg running with systemd

Use a system service configured to start at boot and restart FFmpeg after a process failure. Run it as a dedicated unprivileged Linux account, restrict access to the media and secret configuration, and retain logs. Add a practical alert or check for both process exits and YouTube stream-health failures. A systemd restart can relaunch a crashed process; it cannot repair a wrong or revoked key, missing file, unsupported media, exhausted CPU, network outage, or a broadcast ended by YouTube.

An Ubuntu VPS example uses FFmpeg, local playlist files, and a systemd service for restart behavior, but it is an implementation example rather than a YouTube specification or uptime guarantee: LinuxBabe’s Ubuntu walkthrough. Adapt any example to your distribution, FFmpeg build, file paths, and credential-handling practices.

Check archive expectations for a continuous stream

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will become one indefinitely archived video. Check the current YouTube controls and how your actual broadcast is segmented before relying on the archive for replay or record-keeping. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • No incoming signal: Recheck the stream URL, key, and selected stream in Live Control Room. Confirm FFmpeg is running and inspect its logs for connection errors.
  • RTMPS or SSL connection error: Confirm that you copied the RTMPS URL rather than the default RTMP address. YouTube notes that port 443 may help in some configurations.
  • Unstable stream or poor health: Compare the chosen bitrate with actual sustained VPS upload capacity. Test representative content and reduce the output target if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • FFmpeg exits or systemd keeps restarting it: Read the service logs. Check file paths and permissions, media compatibility, CPU use, key validity, and network access; restarting repeatedly will not resolve a persistent underlying error.
  • Some files fail or transitions break: Test the full playlist, not just one clip. Check codecs, timestamps, frame rates, durations, and audio, then normalize or re-encode incompatible files.
  • FFmpeg is active but viewers see no live stream: Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. A healthy Linux process is not evidence that YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to avoid administering a Linux server and FFmpeg, StreamNeo is a hosted option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives each account one free day with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI works for payments in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera.
