Which Witcher 3 PC version is this guide for?
This guide covers The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. Its PC version uses native DirectX 12 and adds rendering options and updated requirements, so advice for the classic release or the 2022 next-gen update should not be assumed to apply unchanged. CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement lists multithreading, GTAO, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space effects and HDR calibration among the changes.
The remaster also supports DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 with Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2, and XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency. FSR 4 is supported on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer; unsupported GPUs use FSR 2. Check the official feature announcement for this compatibility distinction.
Match your PC to a resolution and FPS target first
Write down your GPU, CPU, display resolution and preferred frame-rate target. Then compare them with the remaster’s published tiers rather than choosing a preset just because it says Ultra. The table below transcribes CD PROJEKT RED’s targets as reported by PC Gamer; they are configuration-specific estimates, not independent benchmark results.

These figures describe targets for their listed resolutions and modes, not minimum hardware needed to play every version or setting. In particular, the RTX 5080 and 16 GB VRAM belong to the listed 4K path-tracing target; they are not a baseline requirement for ordinary raster play.
What settings should you change for more FPS?
1. Start with raster rendering for a performance-first setup
Leave ray tracing and path tracing off if your immediate priority is a smoother frame rate. CD PROJEKT RED lists separate, more demanding RT and path-tracing tiers, so this is a conservative recommendation from the tier comparison—not a promise of a fixed FPS gain on every GPU. NVIDIA describes path tracing as combining lighting and rendering in one system, while ray tracing can apply to selected features such as shadows or reflections; that explanation is from the GPU vendor, not an independent performance test. 2. Lower output resolution or use a supported upscaler if you miss your target
Resolution is a substantial performance lever. CD PROJEKT RED Support says, “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS,” while noting that scene, system configuration and settings also matter. If you are below your target, try lowering output resolution or enabling an upscaler supported by your GPU before enabling more demanding lighting. The official feature announcement lists the remaster’s DLSS, FSR and XeSS support; availability depends on GPU and mode.
3. Add ray tracing or path tracing only against the matching tier
If you value the lighting effects more than the frame-rate headroom, compare your system with the RT or path-tracing row for your intended resolution. Test in a demanding location rather than assuming a result from a lighter scene will hold everywhere. The published 4K path-tracing configuration uses Frame Generation, and the RT targets were tested with upscaling on Auto; those conditions matter when comparing your own result.

4. Change one option at a time
After choosing a baseline, adjust a single option and revisit the same scene. This makes it easier to tell whether a change improved performance or image quality. No setting-by-setting performance-cost ranking is established in the published material, so avoid assuming that every toggle has the same effect across GPUs and scenes.
How reliable are the official FPS targets?
CD PROJEKT RED Support says its “expected FPS targets in the table above are based on our QA tests.” The support article also warns that results may fluctuate and depend on scene, system configuration, graphics settings and resolution. Treat the tiers as useful reference points, not guaranteed frame rates for every PC. The RT tests used upscaling on Auto, while the path-tracing target also used Frame Generation. Does an SSD improve FPS?
An SSD is required for the remaster’s latest technical enhancements, according to CD PROJEKT RED, and the studio says it can improve load times, asset streaming and overall performance. That does not establish that an SSD will fix a GPU-bound frame-rate problem or guarantee a smoother FPS result. The requirement is documented in the official PC requirements article.
