The clearest sign that a PS5 Slim is overheating is its on-screen high-temperature notification. If it appears, turn the console off and let it cool; Sony warns that continuing to use it while the message is displayed may make the console non-operational. A louder fan alone is not proof of overheating: PlayStation says the fan may temporarily run faster during some games and applications.
What counts as an overheating warning?
Sony’s CFI-20XX PS5 Safety Guide says, “If the console becomes too hot, you will see a notification message on your screen.” It instructs you to turn the console off and wait for it to cool. The guide warns that continued use while the message displays may lead to the console becoming non-operational.
Sony identifies CFI-2000 as the PS5 Slim model group in its PS5 setup guidance; the safety guide uses the CFI-20XX model designation. If your console displays the high-temperature message, treat it as the actionable warning rather than trying to judge temperature by touch.
How to check and improve the console’s setup
- Respond to any warning first. Turn off the console and wait for it to cool before using it again. Do not keep playing while the high-temperature message is on screen.
- Give it open space. Place the cooled console somewhere well ventilated and away from high temperatures. Keep the side and rear vents clear, with at least 10 cm of free space around each side, as recommended in PlayStation’s PS5 noise and ventilation guidance.
- Avoid heat-trapping locations. Do not run the console in a cramped cabinet or on a long-fibre carpet or rug. Check that nearby objects are not blocking the vents.
- Check for dust at the vent openings. If dust has built up, disconnect the AC power cable from the rear of the console before cleaning. PlayStation recommends using a low-powered vacuum around the vents. Keep the cleaning to accessible areas; these instructions do not require opening the console.
- Check an M.2 SSD only if you installed one. After a high-temperature notification, Sony’s CFI-20XX guide advises checking that the M.2 SSD’s heat-dissipation parts have not detached. This check does not apply to every PS5 Slim owner.
Is a loud fan a sign of overheating?
Not by itself. PlayStation says that during some games and applications the fan may temporarily run faster and louder to cool the system more effectively, and describes that as normal. A fan becoming louder on its own is not the same as the on-screen high-temperature warning.

The cited PlayStation guidance does not establish warm exhaust air, a warm-feeling case, a particular game, or subjective impressions of heat as standalone overheating tests. It also does not provide a consumer app or sensor method for checking the console’s internal temperature, or a numeric temperature threshold.
What if the warning returns?
If the high-temperature notification returns after the console has cooled and you have corrected airflow and accessible vent dust, stop using it and contact PlayStation Support or arrange service through PlayStation’s Repairs service. The same applies if it shuts down unexpectedly or the issue persists. The guidance does not promise that a remote support contact can identify the cause.

Do not use a red indicator light as a PS5 Slim overheating diagnosis. PlayStation’s indicator-light page lists a pulsing-red overheating indication for PS4; it does not establish that code for PS5 Slim.
