To install and play Project Reclaimer, you need your own Steam copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) with Halo 3 installed. Then download the Project Reclaimer client from its official GitHub releases, verify the executable’s checksum, and launch it. The client does not include Halo 3 or MCC game files.
What you need before downloading
- A Steam copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
- Halo 3 installed through MCC. Campaign play also requires the relevant Halo 3 campaign content.
- A Windows PC to run the versioned client executable.
Project Reclaimer is a client for Halo 3 content in your own MCC installation, not a standalone copy of the game. Its official download repository says the game files are not included: ProjectReclaimer’s releases repository.
Download and install Project Reclaimer
- Install MCC through Steam. In MCC, make sure Halo 3 is installed before continuing.
- Get the current client. Open the official ProjectReclaimer releases page and download the versioned executable from the latest release. The latest listed when checked was v0.9.0, released October 3, 2026; check the page for a newer build when you download.
- Verify the executable. Compare its SHA-256 hash with the
SHA256SUMS.txtfile attached to that same release before running it. The repository documents this Windows PowerShell command:Get-FileHash project-reclaimer.exe -Algorithm SHA256
Run the command in the folder containing the downloaded executable, then compare the displayed hash with the matching entry in the release checksum file. - Launch the client. Start the versioned executable. The current release notes say it searches Steam libraries for Halo 3 and launches without opening a console window. The client log is at
DocumentsMy GamesProject ReclaimerLogsclient.log.
Choose what to play
Join a multiplayer server
Project Reclaimer uses its own menus rather than sending you through MCC’s menus or matchmaking. For multiplayer, start with its community server browser, choose a server, and join. The project site describes support for custom games, playlists, and mods that a client can download when joining a server: Project Reclaimer.
Host a custom game or use Forge
You can host a custom game or use Forge rather than joining an existing server. Project Reclaimer’s v0.9.0 release notes state that custom games can hold up to 64 players; that figure is for custom games, not campaign co-op.

Play the campaign
Campaign options, including solo and co-op, are documented in the release history. Make sure Halo 3’s campaign content is installed in MCC. The v0.9.0 notes state that campaign co-op remains capped at 16 players.
Optional controller aiming settings
A controller is optional, not an installation requirement. If you use one, open Settings → Controller → Aim control and choose Modern or Classic aiming, as documented in v0.9.0’s release notes.

Troubleshoot missing campaign files
If the client reports that campaign files are missing, first check that Halo 3’s campaign content is installed through MCC’s Steam DLC settings. Earlier Project Reclaimer release instructions also recommend using Steam’s Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files option if campaign files are missing. Steam’s labels or the exact recovery steps may differ over time, so treat that as a troubleshooting route rather than a guaranteed current interface path.
