One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you like Dead Cells for its fast combat, exploration, and route choices, start with Hollow Knight. It offers a large interconnected world and demanding action, though it does not reproduce Dead Cells’ cycle of randomized runs and permadeath. For a closer match in mood, try Blasphemous; for precise traversal, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown; for movement and visual presentation, Ori and the Will of the Wisps; or for gentler exploration, SteamWorld Dig 2.
What makes a game feel like Dead Cells?
Motion Twin describes Dead Cells as “a rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer, allowing you to explore a sprawling, ever-changing castle… assuming you’re able to fight your way past its keepers.” Its appeal combines quick 2D action, permadeath, changing routes, and exploration. Those ingredients overlap with metroidvanias, but the structures are not identical: Dead Cells is built around repeated runs, while the recommendations below primarily offer persistent, interconnected worlds to explore.
That distinction matters when choosing what to play next. As PC Gamer explains, randomized dungeons and persistent unlocks give Dead Cells some metroidvania-like progression while keeping its repeated-run structure. Pick by the part you want more of, rather than expecting any one game to duplicate the whole formula.
Which Dead Cells quality do you want more of?
| If you want… | Try… | What carries over |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration, bosses, combat, and build choices | Hollow Knight | A demanding action-platformer set in a richly explorable world |
| Dark atmosphere and punishing combat | Blasphemous | Brutal action and challenging encounters |
| Traversal challenges and platforming precision | Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Combat and platforming across interconnected biomes |
| Expressive movement and presentation | Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Platforming-forward action with polished presentation |
| Exploration with less emphasis on punishing combat | SteamWorld Dig 2 | Digging, gadgets, upgrades, and access to new zones |
Best games like Dead Cells, by play style
Hollow Knight: the broadest exploration pick
Choose Hollow Knight if what keeps you playing Dead Cells is finding new areas, taking on bosses, and sharpening your combat and platforming. Its charm-based choices add room to shape how you play. GamesRadar ranks it first in its metroidvania guide and praises its world, bosses, combat, platforming, art, and soundtrack; that ranking is the outlet’s editorial judgment, not an objective similarity score.
#1 Best Overall

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

It is the strongest all-round starting point on this list, but it is a different kind of journey: expect a connected world to learn and revisit, not a fresh randomized run after each death.
Blasphemous: dark atmosphere and demanding action
If you want the darker side of Dead Cells—dangerous fights and a hostile world—Blasphemous is the most direct tone match here. Steam’s listing tags it as both Metroidvania and Souls-like and describes a brutal action-platformer set in Cvstodia. The Game Kitchen developed it; Team17 published it. Steam lists its release date as September 10, 2019.

Go with Ori and the Will of the Wisps if fluid platforming and a strong visual presentation matter more to you than reproducing Dead Cells’ run structure.
