A padlock beside a PlayStation game usually signals a license or access problem, but the icon alone does not tell you why. First identify how you got the game—purchased, claimed as a monthly game, downloaded from a catalog, or shared by another account—then check the matching account, membership, and availability. If those are correct, restore licenses and move on to console or network troubleshooting.
Identify what gives you access to the game
PlayStation Plus games do not all use the same entitlement rules. Work out which access path applies before changing console settings; a fix for a catalog title may not help with a game another account owns.

Check the account, membership, and availability
- Sign in to the account that owns the entitlement. For a purchase, use the purchasing account. For a claimed monthly game, use the account that claimed it. If another person owns the game, the owner’s sharing setup controls access.
- Check the transaction or claim. Look in transaction history for a recent purchase or redemption. If the game was never bought or claimed on this account, restoring licenses will not create that entitlement.
- Confirm the membership benefit applies. Check that the membership is active and that the plan covers the game’s access path. Monthly games, Game Catalog titles, and Classics Catalog titles have different eligibility rules.
- Check whether the title is still offered. Catalog availability can change. Look up the game in the current PlayStation Plus catalog or on the console; a previous download does not establish that a catalog entitlement remains available.
Check console sharing and family restrictions
If the game belongs to someone else on the console, have the owner verify the relevant sharing setting. On PS5, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, check whether the console is activated as the owner’s primary PS4. Sony’s console-sharing guidance explains the applicable settings.
If the lock covers the whole PS5 game image rather than appearing only for one title, ask the family manager to check parental-control settings. Sony includes this as a possible cause in its game access troubleshooting guidance.

Restore licenses on the affected account
Sony says a padlock can indicate a license problem and recommends restoring licenses. Do this while signed in to the account whose purchase or Plus entitlement should provide access.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore.
Sony states that restoring licenses “won’t affect your data.” See Sony’s license-restoration instructions. When it finishes, try launching the game again.

Rule out a PlayStation Network or console issue
If the account and entitlement check out but the lock remains, check PlayStation Network status. If there is an outage or maintenance notice, wait and retry rather than treating a service interruption as a license failure.
When services are available, update the console’s system software and restart it. If the problem persists, follow Sony’s game-launch troubleshooting steps, which include rebuilding the database in Safe Mode, checking storage, and deleting and redownloading the game. For a matching PS5 license-verification error, Sony also recommends restarting the router and modem and trying again later. Sony’s guidance does not make that a universal fix for every padlock, so use it when the error or behavior matches. License troubleshooting guidance.
When region matters
Region is a narrower possibility than account or entitlement problems for a digital Plus game. It is especially relevant when a disc and add-on do not work together: Sony says their regions must match. PlayStation Store content varies by region, and an account’s country or region cannot be changed after account creation. Check Sony’s country and region guidance if you need to verify the account’s store region.

Contact PlayStation Support with useful details
If the game remains unavailable after these checks, contact PlayStation Support and include the exact error code or message, what happens when you try to launch it, and the steps that reproduce the problem. A screenshot or video can help show where access fails.
