No. PS5 AI upscaling depends on the console, the game and its implementation—not just the TV. Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is for PS5 Pro and works only in games that support it. Sony has also announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for base PS5, initially in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei; making QSSR available to developers does not mean every game already uses it. A TV affects which video modes the console can output, but it cannot add upscaling support to a game.
What PS5 AI upscaling works with which games?
Sony has two named AI-upscaling technologies for different console tiers. PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro. QSSR is a separate technology announced for the base PS5. In both cases, support depends on a game implementing the feature; a console-wide setting does not make an unsupported title compatible.
| Technology | Console | What support means |
|---|---|---|
| PSSR | PS5 Pro | Only PSSR-compatible games can use it. Sony said on February 27, 2026 that it had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles as of that announcement. This is a dated figure, not a complete or continuously updated compatibility list. Sony Interactive Entertainment, February 27, 2026 |
| QSSR | Base PS5 | Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first QSSR titles on October 1, 2026, and said it would make the technology broadly available to developers. That announcement establishes those initial titles and developer access, not support in every PS5 game. Sony Interactive Entertainment, October 1, 2026 |
Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. An updated version announced in February 2026 was rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players. The console setting can enable enhanced image quality in certain games that already support PSSR; it does not supply a missing game implementation. Sony’s announcement and its March 2026 update describe title-dependent integrations and results.
Support can depend on a game update and its settings
Assassin’s Creed Shadows shows why checking the game itself matters. Ubisoft added PSSR to the PS5 Pro version with title update 1.0.2. Players who had already started the game needed to activate the option in its video menu; new players had it activated by default. That is one developer’s implementation, not a rule for every game. Does the TV need to support AI upscaling?
No special TV feature makes a game PSSR- or QSSR-compatible. The TV and HDMI connection affect the signal the console can send—such as resolution and refresh rate—rather than whether a game implements an upscaler. Sony says all PS5 consoles have 4K and HDR capabilities, but 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen, and the picture you get depends on the home-entertainment setup. PlayStation 4K guidance
Match the display to the output mode you want. Sony discusses HDMI 2.1 in connection with 4K/120 Hz output; its support guidance does not state that HDMI 2.1 is a general requirement for 4K output, PSSR or QSSR. Features such as 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM require the display and signal path to support them. 4K guidance · PlayStation 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting

If 4K/120 Hz is not working
These checks address video output, not whether a game supports an AI upscaler:
- Confirm that the TV supports the signal and that its firmware is up to date.
- Use the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or check whether an intermediary receiver or device supports the signal.
- Use the TV’s HDMI port intended for the relevant high-bandwidth features.
- Check the console’s resolution and transfer-rate settings.
Sony notes that TV support for 4K/120 Hz varies. Its troubleshooting guidance covers the connection and setting checks.

Where to check PS5 and game settings
Check the console’s PSSR image-quality option
On eligible CFI-7000 model-group consoles, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says this option improves image quality in certain PSSR-compatible games and is on by default; you can turn it off. If a game does not support PSSR, this setting will not add support. PlayStation Support
Check the game’s video menu and patch notes
A supported game may have a separate graphics or upscaling option, or support may arrive in a game update. Review the title’s current patch notes and video settings. In Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows example, existing players had to enable PSSR in the game’s video menu after the feature arrived in update 1.0.2. Ubisoft’s implementation notes

Check what the console detects from the TV
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to inspect detected HDMI-device information, resolution and available output options. Sony says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically. For 4K, use a compatible 4K screen and a 2160p video-output setting. PlayStation Support

Upscaling can help a game balance render resolution, frame rate and image clarity, but the result varies by title and is not guaranteed to be artifact-free. Ubisoft explains that rendering at a lower resolution can help frame rate while trading off clarity and potentially introducing visual artifacts. Sony also advises turning off Enhance PSSR Image Quality if unexpected visual effects occur. Neither vendor statement establishes a universal measured improvement across games or TVs.
