How to Troubleshoot Mouse Disconnects and Input Lag During a Match

Start with power and the physical connection, then isolate whether a wired, receiver-based, or Bluetooth mouse is failing before changing Windows or game settings.

If your mouse disconnects or feels delayed during a match, start with its power and physical connection, then isolate whether the problem is the mouse, connection type, or PC. The right checks differ for a wired USB mouse, a wireless mouse with a USB receiver, and a Bluetooth mouse; changing game settings or polling rate first may send you in the wrong direction.

First, identify the connection and the symptom

Work out whether the mouse connects by cable, a USB wireless receiver, or Bluetooth. Also note what happens: does the device stop responding entirely, does the cursor feel delayed while the mouse remains connected, or does it fail after the PC wakes or at intervals? Those details help narrow the checks without assuming that all lag is a connection failure. Logitech lists disconnections, wake failures, lag, and delay among possible connection symptoms, with causes that can include low battery, hubs, wireless interference, Windows USB power settings, or a device or receiver fault. Logitech’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these possibilities.

Connection type Checks that apply first
Wired USB Inspect and reseat the cable; connect directly to another USB port and bypass any hub.
USB receiver wireless Check battery or charge, reseat the receiver, try another direct port, and improve receiver placement.
Bluetooth Check battery or charge and use Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting rather than USB receiver steps.

Check power and the physical connection

  1. Check power: Charge a rechargeable mouse or try fresh batteries in a battery-powered model.
  2. Inspect a wired cable: Look for visible damage and make sure the plug is seated securely.
  3. Reseat the connection: Unplug and reconnect the cable or USB receiver. Microsoft suggests unplugging a USB wireless receiver, waiting about 10 seconds, and reconnecting it.
  4. Change the USB port: Connect directly to a different port on the computer. Temporarily remove any hub, dock, or other intermediary from the connection.

Microsoft recommends checking power, cables, connections, alternate ports, and temporarily bypassing hubs in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance. Logitech also lists low battery and hub connections as possible contributors to connection problems. If the mouse is Bluetooth, follow the Bluetooth troubleshooting path in Windows; reconnecting a USB receiver will not address a Bluetooth pairing problem.

If you use a wireless USB receiver, improve its position

  • Move the receiver to another direct USB port. If it is plugged into the back of a desktop, try a front port.
  • Place the receiver where it has a clearer, closer path to the mouse instead of leaving it behind an obstruction or in a crowded area.
  • Where practical, move nearby wireless or electrical devices away from the receiver and mouse.

Logitech identifies receiver placement and nearby wireless devices as possible contributors and recommends changing the receiver port and moving the mouse closer. For the M280, M320, and M275 mouse family specifically, Logitech recommends keeping other electrical devices at least 8 inches (20 cm) away. That spacing advice is for those models, not a universal guarantee for every wireless mouse. See Logitech’s M280/M320/M275 guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

An optional USB extension cable can make it easier to position a receiver near the mouse, but try free placement and another port first. Moving the receiver cannot fix every cause, including a depleted battery, hardware fault, software problem, Bluetooth issue, or all forms of interference. Logitech’s general connection troubleshooting steps focus on port choice and receiver proximity.

Test whether the mouse or the PC is the likely source

Connect the mouse to another computer and test it there, using the correct driver if that model requires one. Treat the result as a diagnostic clue, not proof of which component failed:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • The problem follows the mouse: If it also disconnects or lags on another computer, the mouse, cable, or receiver becomes a stronger suspect. Microsoft says replacement may be needed if the device does not work on another PC.
  • The mouse works elsewhere: Focus next on the original computer’s USB port, Windows configuration, updates, or software.

This comparison is an isolation heuristic; a failed test does not identify the faulty part by itself. Microsoft recommends trying the device on another PC, and Logitech also includes cross-computer testing in its connection troubleshooting guidance.

Check Windows power and software settings later

If the basic checks do not help and you are on Windows, investigate power management and software after the physical connection and cross-computer tests. Logitech lists USB selective suspend and USB hub power management among possible causes for some wired or gaming mouse disconnects, including devices that stop working at intervals. Its older setting paths can vary by Windows version, device, and power plan, so consult current Windows controls and documentation for your specific mouse before changing anything. If a setting change does not help, restore its previous value. See Logitech’s gaming mouse connection guidance.

Also check Windows Update and the mouse maker’s currently supported driver or firmware tools if the issue persists. Use instructions for the exact model: Logitech notes that some older utilities are no longer maintained. Do not assume that installing an old utility or changing an unrelated setting will resolve the issue.

Diagnose input lag without guessing at a setting

A mouse that feels delayed is not necessarily disconnecting. The manufacturer guidance recognizes lag and delay as symptoms but does not establish that a particular polling rate, DPI value, mouse surface, or in-game setting fixes them. Avoid treating one of those settings as the cause without evidence.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

As a practical comparison, change one setting at a time and check whether the delay occurs both in the match and outside the game. If the mouse also behaves badly in Windows or on another computer, continue investigating its connection or hardware. If the problem appears only in one game, note that distinction before changing game or mouse settings; it narrows the problem but does not by itself identify a fix.

When to consider replacement

Consider replacing the mouse or a damaged cable only after checking power and connections and testing on another computer. If the mouse fails on multiple computers, that result makes a device, cable, or receiver problem more plausible, but it does not prove which one needs replacement. Microsoft notes that replacement may be necessary when a mouse or keyboard does not work on another PC.
