Rockstar North development head Rob Nelson has described three ways control can work: some story scenes restrict switching, some missions hand control between the leads automatically, and others let players switch between them. That points to a more relationship-driven take on the multi-protagonist idea than a simple repeat of GTA 5’s system—but the exact rules for free-roam switching have not been fully established.
Why GTA 6 has two protagonists
Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page describes Jason and Lucia relying on one another after an easy score goes wrong, as events draw them into a conspiracy across Leonida. Nelson said Rockstar considered other configurations, including four characters, but worried that adding more protagonists would leave less time to develop each one and make emotional investment harder.
His explanation makes the relationship itself central to the setup: “This game is the story of Jason and Lucia, but at the same time, it is also the story of the relationship between two human beings.” That quotation comes from an English translation of a Famitsu interview published by GTAVice.net; consult the original Japanese wording if exact phrasing matters. Read the translated interview.
How switching between Jason and Lucia could work
Nelson’s interview describes three patterns, rather than one universal switching rule. Which pattern applies depends on the scene or mission.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Story sections can lock control to one character
Some sequences restrict switching for story reasons. Nelson gave the example of a high-rise mission focused on Jason, whose former special-forces background makes him the appropriate character for that section. In those moments, the story determines whose perspective the player controls.
Missions can switch characters automatically
Other missions can move control between Jason and Lucia without asking the player to choose. In the police-escape example Nelson described, the player starts as Jason firing from a car, then control switches to Lucia as she drives. The handoff is part of the action, not simply a menu choice between scenes.

Some missions allow players to alternate
Nelson also said that some missions let players switch between the pair. A convenience-store robbery, for example, can be attempted alone or with Lucia invited along. That example shows how the partnership may affect an activity, but it does not establish how often this choice appears or exactly how it changes the robbery.
GTA 6 compared with GTA 5
GTA 5 is the relevant predecessor: its official Rockstar page identifies the earlier game, while Nelson’s account describes GTA 6 as a story about Jason, Lucia, and their relationship. The available interview supports a comparison of design intent, but not a detailed reconstruction of GTA 5’s controls. Rockstar’s accessible GTA 5 page does not provide enough gameplay detail to verify specific button prompts, switching animations, or mission-by-mission behavior.

| Design question | GTA 5 | GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Protagonists and their relationship | Three protagonists; the official page establishes the predecessor context, but the accessible page does not detail their gameplay relationship. | Jason and Lucia; Nelson describes their relationship as part of the story. |
| When can control switch? | Specific switching rules are not stated in the accessible Rockstar page. | Nelson describes story-restricted sections, automatic handoffs, and missions that allow players to switch. |
| Do missions hand control over automatically? | Not stated in the accessible Rockstar page. | Yes, in some missions, according to Nelson; he cites a police escape that changes from Jason to Lucia. |
| How often do protagonists act as a team? | Not stated in the accessible Rockstar page. | Not stated in the interview; Nelson’s robbery example allows Lucia to accompany Jason. |
| Can the other protagonist take part in a shared activity? | Specific examples are not stated in the accessible Rockstar page. | Yes, the convenience-store robbery can be attempted alone or with Lucia along, according to Nelson. |
What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain
The switching patterns and examples above are developer-reported interview details, not observations from a playable or retail build. Nelson’s comments establish that switching can be restricted, automatic, or player-directed depending on the mission. They do not establish every condition for changing characters in free roam, how frequently the options occur, or whether the final implementation will differ from the interview description.
It is reasonable to infer that GTA 6 may make switching feel more like managing a criminal partnership than choosing among parallel leads, because the story and some activities explicitly connect Jason and Lucia. That is an interpretation of the reported design, not a confirmed rule for every mission or open-world situation.
