Start with Steam Remote Play if your games are in Steam and you want the simplest setup; consider Moonlight with Sunshine if you’re comfortable configuring a separate host and client. Neither option is established as a universal winner for latency or picture quality. Your hardware, network, and preferred game workflow matter, so test both on your own setup if performance is the deciding factor.
How the two streaming options work
Steam Remote Play uses Steam Link clients
Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from a computer running Steam to a supported device, then returns your input to the PC. Valve’s Steam Link app and hardware provide the client side. Valve describes streaming both at home and elsewhere, subject to network conditions. Steam Link hardware and setup and Steam Remote Play explain the available paths.
Moonlight is the client; Sunshine is a current host option
Moonlight is a streaming client, not the host software. Its setup guide recommends installing Sunshine on the gaming PC, then pairing a Moonlight client. The guide lists modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs for Sunshine, along with operating-system requirements that vary by version. Check the Moonlight setup guide and Moonlight FAQ for the current details. Moonlight has also supported NVIDIA GameStream hosts historically, but Sunshine is the documented current setup path discussed here.
Steam Remote Play vs. Moonlight with Sunshine
| Decision | Steam Remote Play | Moonlight with Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install Steam Link on a client and connect it to a computer running Steam. | Install and configure Sunshine on the host, then pair a Moonlight client. The guide recommends pairing over the home network first. |
| Game and app fit | Built around Steam games. Valve says virtually every game the host computer runs can be streamed using Steam Link hardware. | Sunshine can expose games and apps; Moonlight’s guide says apps can be added manually if they are not detected automatically. |
| Host hardware | Requires a computer running Steam. Performance depends on the PC and its encoding support. | The current Sunshine guide lists modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs. Confirm the supported OS and specific host requirements in the guide. |
| Client devices | Valve lists phones, tablets, TVs, desktop systems, Raspberry Pi, and compatible VR headsets. Availability depends on the device and app. | Moonlight lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Android, Amazon Fire devices, iOS, Apple TV, and ChromeOS clients. Verify support for your particular device. |
| Network and tuning | Steam provides an integrated workflow and supported controller configuration. Network restrictions can block connections. | Offers more host and client configuration options, with additional setup. Start with local pairing before attempting internet streaming. |
| Latency and image quality | No cited controlled comparison establishes that it is always faster or looks better. | No cited controlled comparison establishes that it is always faster or looks better. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Steam Remote Play for a Steam-centered, simpler setup
If you already use Steam, want its integrated streaming workflow, and own a device supported by Valve, try Steam Remote Play first. Steam Link is designed to connect a client to a computer running Steam, and Valve lists a broad range of client categories on its Remote Play page.

Consider Moonlight with Sunshine for a separately configured setup
Moonlight with Sunshine may suit you if you are willing to configure host software and want the documented Sunshine route for modern AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel GPUs. Check the current OS, GPU, and client requirements before installing; platform support can change.
Compare both if responsiveness or picture quality is the deciding factor
The cited Valve and Moonlight documentation does not provide a controlled, current head-to-head test. Try each option with the same game, client, and network conditions rather than relying on a universal performance claim.

Set up the network before troubleshooting the stream
For Steam Remote Play
Valve recommends wired networking in relevant Steam Link setups. Its suggested network settings warn that access point or client isolation can prevent devices from connecting. Public, workplace, school, guest, captive-portal, or login-gated networks may block Remote Play; the support page also lists ports for troubleshooting.
For Moonlight with Sunshine
Pair the client and host over your home network first, as the Moonlight setup guide recommends. Once local streaming works, troubleshoot internet access separately, since it depends on the host, client, router, internet service provider, and network path. The guide’s Sunshine requirements include Windows 10 or 11, macOS 12 or newer marked experimental, and specified Linux distributions and versions; consult it for current requirements.

Improve a weak connection without assuming one fix solves everything
A wired host-to-router connection can help when Wi-Fi instability is the problem, but it does not guarantee low latency. Client Wi-Fi, router congestion, encoding, decoding, and—when streaming remotely—the internet route can all affect the experience. A compatible controller is useful for couch or mobile play, but it is not mandatory for every client or game.

Before streaming away from home
- Get a working stream over your home network first, particularly with Moonlight.
- Check whether the host and client networks allow the required connection. Valve documents network conditions that can block Remote Play, including client isolation and some managed or login-gated networks.
- For Moonlight, confirm the host, router, client, and internet path are configured for remote access; local pairing alone does not establish that remote streaming will work.
