Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a standard game card if you want the game data on a removable card that you can insert into another console, or if you want to avoid downloading the full game. Choose digital if you prefer an account-managed library and have room and internet access for downloads. There is an important exception: a game-key card is physical, but it acts as a key to download the game; it still needs storage, and the card must remain inserted to play.
What is the difference between a standard card and a game-key card?
Nintendo Switch 2 has two physical game-card formats. A standard game card contains the game in a playable card format. A game-key card does not contain the full game: it authorizes a download to system memory or a microSD Express card. Once downloaded, the key card must still be inserted when you play.
Nintendo says an internet connection is required the first time a game-key card is launched on a given system. After the download, it can launch offline. A Nintendo Account is not required for this download. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview gives the required free space; check it on the box or store listing before buying.
Physical packaging does not guarantee that a game is on a card. Some publishers may put a download code in the box instead. Check the exact game’s packaging and listing, including whether it says game-key card or download code. Nintendo outlines this distinction in its Switch 2 FAQ.

How do the formats compare?
| What matters | Standard game card | Game-key card | Digital purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the game data is | On the card in a playable card format. | Downloaded to system memory or microSD Express storage; the key card is required to play. | Downloaded to the console or supported storage. |
| Internet and storage | Does not require downloading the full game data from the internet. | Internet required for first launch on each system, plus enough free storage for the download. | Requires downloading the game and enough storage. |
| Offline access | Insert the card to play, subject to the game’s own requirements. | After download, it can launch offline with the key card inserted. | A Virtual Game Card loaded on a console can be played offline. Online-license play requires an internet check when opening. |
| Using it on another console | Physical games can be used on any console; insert the card. | Insert the card, and download the game on that system before first play. | Use a Virtual Game Card on up to two linked consoles, or an online license on three or more systems, subject to Nintendo’s rules. |
| Who can play on a console | Access follows the inserted card, with the game’s own restrictions. | Access follows the inserted key card and downloaded game, with the game’s own restrictions. | Other users of the console can play a loaded Virtual Game Card. Online-license play is limited to users linked with the purchasing Nintendo Account. |
Nintendo does not establish a universal price or resale-value advantage for either format. Compare the price and terms for the exact game in your market; availability, packaging and offers can vary.
How digital access works across consoles and users
Virtual Game Cards
Nintendo eShop purchases are managed as Virtual Game Cards. A Virtual Game Card can be loaded on either of up to two linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. When it is loaded, it can be played offline, and other users on that console can play it. You can also lend it to Nintendo Account family group members under Nintendo’s rules.

To move a Virtual Game Card between linked consoles, both consoles must be powered on or in sleep mode and connected to the internet during the swap. A game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems using Virtual Game Cards.
Online licenses
An online license can be used on three or more systems, but the console needs an internet connection when the game opens. Only users linked with the purchasing Nintendo Account can play through this method. A game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems using online licenses either. Nintendo explains both options in its Virtual Game Card Guide and Switch 2 FAQ.

How much storage do downloads need?
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2, with some space reserved for system use. That is the platform’s stated capacity, not a promise that all 256 GB is available for games. Digital downloads and game-key card installs use storage, so check the individual game’s required free space before purchase.
Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage to play. If you do add storage for software, Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card; conventional microSD cards are not compatible for storing Switch 2 software. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ and compatibility page for the current details.

What happens to save data if you change formats?
Save data is separate from the game installation. Nintendo says saves are stored in system memory and, for the most part, follow the user regardless of whether the game is on a card or downloaded. Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. Nintendo Switch Online members can use Save Data Cloud for supported games; cloud backup is not available for every title.
Which format fits your situation?
Choose a standard game card if…
- You want to avoid downloading the full game data.
- You want to move a copy between consoles by inserting the card, rather than managing a digital license.
- You prefer a removable physical copy and have checked that the box contains a standard game card, not a key card or download code.
Choose digital if…
- You want an account-managed library and are comfortable downloading games.
- You want to use Virtual Game Cards across up to two linked consoles or online licenses across more systems, and the relevant user and internet conditions work for you.
- You have enough free storage for the games you plan to install.
A game-key card can work if…
- You are comfortable with a physical card that is a download key rather than the game itself.
- You can connect to the internet for the first launch on each system, have enough free storage, and can keep the card inserted when playing.
Moving from an original Switch to Switch 2
Nintendo supports transferring digital games and certain data from an original Switch to Switch 2 through System Transfer. The transfer and some online features or backup options depend on the account and, for certain services, Nintendo Switch Online requirements. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 Transfer Guide and Accounts FAQ for the steps and conditions that apply to your consoles.
