Both support up to four players, but Diddy Kong Racing’s Tracks mode has a progression catch: many courses must first be unlocked in Adventure mode. This recommendation follows documented features, not comparative playtesting.
How the multiplayer choices compare
| What matters | Mario Kart 64 | Diddy Kong Racing |
|---|---|---|
| Players | Two to four players in split-screen VS; Battle is also a multiplayer mode, according to Nintendo’s Mario Kart 64 game page and instruction manual. | Two to four players in Versus mode, according to Nintendo’s Diddy Kong Racing game page; the manual transcription also describes up to four racers in Tracks mode. |
| Racing access | VS is a selectable mode. The manual describes 16 race courses. | Tracks mode is used for multiplayer racing, but the manual transcription says many courses are initially locked until opened in Adventure mode. |
| Battle play | Balloon Battle: pop opponents’ attached balloons on four dedicated battle courses, as described in the manual. | The manual transcription describes four battle types, including two objective-oriented variants. Their exact rules are not detailed here. |
| Vehicles | Karts; racers have character-specific handling, and the game offers 50cc, 100cc and 150cc engine classes, according to Nintendo’s game page. | Cars, hovercrafts and planes. The manual transcription says players can choose different vehicles when a course permits it. |
| Course figures | The manual counts 16 race courses and four battle courses. Nintendo’s page describes four cups of four tracks each. | Nintendo lists 20 courses overall. That total is not directly comparable to Mario Kart 64’s race-course count: the games organize modes and course access differently. |
Pick Mario Kart 64 for quick-start races and Balloon Battle
Mario Kart 64 makes the multiplayer choice straightforward: select VS for split-screen racing with two, three or four players, or choose Battle for balloon-popping matches. The manual lists 16 race courses and four battle courses, so groups can switch between racing and a distinct battle option without relying on a campaign to open the multiplayer mode.
Its racing variety comes from eight characters with different handling, item use, and three engine classes—50cc, 100cc and 150cc—rather than switching between vehicle types. Nintendo’s UK page dates the game’s European release to 24 June 1997 and describes four cups of four tracks each.
Pick Diddy Kong Racing for vehicle and battle variety
Diddy Kong Racing lets racers use cars, hovercrafts or planes, with vehicle choice depending on the course. Nintendo lists 20 courses overall and says Versus mode supports two to four players. That combination gives a group more mechanical variety than kart-only racing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its manual transcription also describes four multiplayer battle types, compared with Mario Kart 64’s balloon battle format. The documentation establishes that the scenarios differ, but not that one game’s battles are more balanced or more enjoyable for every group.
Know the Tracks-mode unlock caveat
The manual text hosted by World of Nintendo says only the first level from each world is initially available in Tracks mode; other courses must be opened through Adventure mode. Because this detail comes from a third-party transcription rather than a Nintendo-hosted manual, treat it as a documented caveat, not a guarantee for every regional version. If your group wants a broad course selection immediately, this is the practical drawback to consider.

Which one should your group choose?
- Choose Mario Kart 64 if you want to get into multiplayer racing quickly and have Balloon Battle as a clear alternative.
- Choose Diddy Kong Racing if changing between cars, hovercrafts and planes and trying distinct battle scenarios matter more than having every course available immediately.
- If both priorities matter, decide whether your group is willing to spend time in Adventure mode before expecting access to Diddy Kong Racing’s wider Tracks selection.
These are feature-based recommendations. The available documentation does not establish which game is more fun, beginner-friendly or competitively balanced.
