If your Nintendo 64 controller is not working with Nintendo Switch Online, first confirm it is Nintendo model HAC-043 and that you are using the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app. Then update the app and console, check charge and pairing, reset the wireless connection with SYNC, and calibrate the stick if that is the problem. Work through the checks below before treating a game-specific issue as a hardware fault.
Check the controller and game first
Look at the label on the back of the controller and confirm the model is HAC-043. The accessory was designed for the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online library; Nintendo does not guarantee that every game, in-game option, or feature outside that library will work with it. If the problem happens in another Switch game, test a compatible N64 title before concluding the controller is faulty. See Nintendo’s guide to using the N64 controller.
Also, if two N64 controllers are connected, only Player 1 can navigate the game-selection menu. A controller that appears unresponsive there may simply be Player 2.
Fix connection, power, and input problems
- Update the N64 app. Install any available update for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online before launching a game.
- Update and restart the console. Install the current system update. If the console is already current, restart it, then test the controller again. For continued button problems, Nintendo also recommends deleting wireless-controller pairing information and pairing the controllers again. This removes pairing information for other wireless controllers too, so you may need to reconnect them. Follow Nintendo’s button and input-lag troubleshooting steps.
- Check battery charge. From the HOME Menu, open Controllers to check the approximate charge. Recharge the controller if needed, then test it again.
- Pair it while the console is awake. The console must be powered on; it cannot pair while asleep. Open Controllers from the HOME Menu and follow the on-screen pairing flow. Nintendo’s N64 controller pairing guide covers the process.
- Reset the wireless connection. Press the controller’s SYNC button once, then press another controller button to turn it back on and reconnect. Nintendo identifies SYNC as the button for pairing and resetting the wireless connection. See the controller button diagram and its input troubleshooting guidance.
Fix an N64 stick that drifts or responds incorrectly
- Pair and power on the controller.
- Open the console’s stick-calibration instructions and follow the on-screen steps.
- If calibration fails or the stick still behaves incorrectly, press SYNC once, reconnect the controller, and try calibration again.
- If calibration succeeds but the problem remains in one game, test another compatible title. The controller may not support that game or its particular control behavior.

Reduce wireless interference
If inputs lag or the connection drops, bring the console closer to the controller and test again. Avoid placing the console behind a TV or under metal. Keep it about three to four feet from wireless speakers, cordless phones, and similar devices, as Nintendo recommends. Then test the controller in a different compatible game to see whether the symptom follows the controller or is limited to one title. If particular buttons remain faulty or the stick continues to malfunction after the checks above, Nintendo advises seeking service. Use Nintendo Support for your country because service options vary by region. Replacing the controller is not the first fix for routine pairing, charging, update, calibration, or interference problems; reserve that decision for a missing, damaged, or incorrect accessory.
