Pearl Abyss recommends keeping save files on another drive or external storage to help recover from accidental overwriting or corruption; its notice does not say that installing DLC itself damages saves. The process is to save in-game, copy the correct platform’s numeric-name folder, and confirm any cloud upload has finished.
Back up your save on PC or Mac
- Save your current progress in-game. Crimson Desert supports automatic and manual saves. Pearl Abyss recommends saving frequently and keeping multiple save files.
- Open the save directory for your version:

~/Library/Application Support/Pearl Abyss/CD/save - Mac, App Store version:

Use the path that matches your installed version. The Windows path uses your Windows account name in place of
[Username]. - Windows:
- Copy the numeric-name subfolder inside
save. Pearl Abyss identifies this folder as containing the in-game saves. Copy it to a different drive, USB flash drive, or other external storage, rather than leaving the only backup in the game’s save directory. An existing external drive is fine; no particular brand or capacity is required. - Wait for cloud synchronization to complete. On Steam, Pearl Abyss warns that closing Steam too quickly can prevent the upload from finishing. Check that sync is complete before closing the client or shutting down.
- Install the DLC and verify your progress. Once the game has loaded, check that your current save appears and loads as expected. Keep the separate copy until you have confirmed this. This is a cautious recovery practice, not a DLC-specific procedure stated by Pearl Abyss.
Pearl Abyss gives these PC and Mac paths in its official Save Data Notice and its clean-install guidance. If either link leads to a support index rather than the notice text, look for the corresponding Pearl Abyss support article by title.
Where are Crimson Desert save files located?
The save directory depends on the operating system and, on Mac, whether you installed the Steam or App Store build. The files to copy are in the numeric-name subfolder within that directory—not the entire game installation. Keep the copied folder somewhere separate so it remains an independent recovery point.
How to restore a backup
If you need to recover a save, Pearl Abyss says to copy the backup files back into the same save directory from which they came. Before replacing anything, check the dates and times of the local and cloud versions. A cloud copy can be older than local progress, and choosing the wrong version in a conflict prompt could replace newer progress.

Cloud saves and console players
Cloud saves are useful, but they are not a substitute for confirming that the newest progress has uploaded. Pearl Abyss warns that local and cloud data can fall out of sync, and a stale cloud copy may overwrite newer local progress.
- Steam: Wait for Cloud synchronization to finish before closing Steam or shutting down.
- PlayStation: Compare the dates and times shown for console and cloud saves before choosing which to keep. Check sync status from the PlayStation home screen, and do not put the console into rest mode immediately after exiting if an upload is still underway.
- After offline play: Confirm that the latest local progress has uploaded before installing an update or launching online.
Pearl Abyss’s notice mentions Xbox cloud saves, but does not provide a manual console-export procedure. The file-copy paths above are for PC and Mac; they are not a way to access or copy console saves.

Does cross-save replace a separate backup?
No. Pearl Abyss added cross-save support in Update 1.14, released July 16, 2026, but cross-save does not remove its recommendation to keep a separate copy. Cross-save and cloud synchronization concern access or syncing between supported services; a copy on separate storage gives you another recovery point.
