CONTROL Resonant and Marvel’s Wolverine make different creative bets: Remedy foregrounds exploration and player choice across several platforms, while Sony presents a character-led, single-player action adventure built around Logan and exclusive to PS5. That contrast makes a useful argument about what games can be—and what big-budget games may be becoming. It is an argument about two releases, though, not proof of an industry-wide shift.
Two different answers to what a big-budget game can be
As of October 4, 2026, both games have launched. CONTROL Resonant arrived September 24 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; Remedy said a Mac version would follow later in 2026. Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide on September 15, exclusively on PS5.
The useful comparison is not simply “open” versus “linear,” or “ambitious” versus “safe.” The studios have described different priorities. Remedy says it wanted a more open and dynamic Control experience blending action, exploration, and player choice. Sony describes Wolverine as a single-player action adventure about Logan searching for answers about his past. Those descriptions support a contrast in design emphasis and access; they do not establish which game is better or what the entire medium is becoming.
What makes CONTROL Resonant different from the first Control?
A larger, more choice-oriented structure
Remedy’s stated aim is to widen the Control formula without discarding its mystery, atmosphere, and tension. Its gameplay description presents large, distinct zones with side activities, hidden encounters, and optional discoveries. Gravity anomalies can alter gravity and orientation, making movement through parts of the world a design feature rather than just a way to get from one fight to another.

That supports calling Resonant more exploratory than the original game’s familiar framework, but “open-world” is too definite a label on the available description. Remedy has described expansive zones, not established that the sequel follows every convention of an open-world game. The distinction matters: large spaces and optional content can broaden a game without telling us how freely its whole world connects or how much meaningful choice each activity offers.
A new protagonist at the center of a Manhattan crisis
The sequel centers on Dylan Faden, with Jesse Faden missing. Remedy’s launch announcement describes a supernatural crisis in Manhattan involving a new resonance as well as the Hiss and Mold. That shifts the series into a new situation and puts Dylan at its center, while keeping the story tied to the strange forces that define Control.

More than one way to play on PS5
Remedy’s September 15, 2026 PS5 feature post gives stated targets, not independent benchmark results. On PS5, Performance mode targets 60 fps at 1440p; Quality mode targets 30 fps at 2160p. On PS5 Pro, Performance targets 60 fps at 2160p, Quality targets 30 fps at 2160p with ray tracing, and Balanced targets 40 fps at 2160p with ray tracing when used with a 120 Hz-compatible display.
The same feature post describes upgrades and build testing in the Gap. Together with Remedy’s emphasis on player choice, that suggests progression and experimentation are part of the game’s pitch, although it does not by itself establish how consequential those choices feel during play.

What Marvel’s Wolverine puts in the foreground
Logan’s story, melee combat, and stealth
Sony describes Wolverine as an original, single-player action adventure in which Logan searches for answers about his past. Its combat description combines fast melee with stealth and Wolverine’s heightened senses. The announced journey visits locations inspired by the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo, and Madripoor.
This is a clear character-led pitch: the locations and abilities are presented in relation to Logan’s story and the action he can perform. Sony’s summary does not foreground the same kind of optional exploration or player-choice language that Remedy uses for Resonant. That difference in emphasis is worth noticing, but a publisher summary cannot prove that a feature it does not mention is absent from the game.

A focused platform choice
Wolverine is exclusive to PS5, while Resonant launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Remedy named Steam and the Epic Games Store for the PC release, and said Mac via Steam and the App Store would follow later in 2026. This is a concrete difference in where players can access the games. Release platforms alone do not establish why either company chose its approach or what audience it expects.

Calling CONTROL Resonant a glimpse of what gaming can be is most persuasive as an expression of possibility: a sequel that pairs a recognizable series identity with larger zones, optional discoveries, shifting physics, and an explicit interest in player choice. Remedy’s design statement gives that reading a firm basis, though it remains a statement of intent rather than independent proof of how fully the finished game realizes it.

Calling Wolverine a picture of what gaming is becoming is a broader and less settled claim. Sony’s description offers a polished, character-centered action-adventure proposition, exclusive to one console. That can stand for one prominent kind of big-budget bet, but two games cannot establish a direction for the whole medium. Nor does a focus on a strong protagonist automatically mean a game is creatively narrow; the announced details do not settle that question.
One Creative Bloq reviewer praised Wolverine’s visuals while criticizing what they saw as safety and repetitive combat. That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a critical consensus. It gives the title’s contrast a useful critical edge, but cannot turn the argument about industry direction into a demonstrated trend.
