That does not establish that QSSR matches PSSR, FSR, or DLSS in image quality or speed: the available descriptions do not include a controlled, same-game comparison. For a useful comparison, check the specific game, upscaler version, rendering settings, platform, and whether frame generation is enabled.
What QSSR changes on PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is the name Sony gave its new PS5 upscaling option. In its October 1, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony described QSSR as a “new performance tier of AI upscaling,” developed from PSSR and Project Amethyst, its AI-graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony attributes the change to a streamlined neural network and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5.
Sony says QSSR improves detail and image stability on PS5, while PSSR remains its highest standard on PS5 Pro. Those are Sony’s descriptions, not results from an independent benchmark or a matched comparison against FSR or DLSS. The announcement does not provide a frame-time figure, percentage performance increase, or comparative image-quality score.
Game support is chosen title by title
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony also said the option would be made broadly available to PlayStation developers. That does not mean every PS5 game supports QSSR: a developer must integrate it into a game. Check a game’s current patch notes and graphics settings for availability.

How QSSR differs from PSSR
The names are related, but they refer to different Sony offerings and hardware contexts. PSSR debuted on PS5 Pro; QSSR is the faster performance tier Sony announced for PS5. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement also described an upgraded PSSR release for supported PS5 Pro games, with improvements it characterized as clearer fine detail, image stability, and more consistent performance. Sony said that update could be applied through an optional system setting and warned that results can vary by title.

Sony connects QSSR and PSSR, but its announcements do not provide a controlled side-by-side test showing that QSSR delivers the same image quality or performance as either PSSR version.

Why “FSR” needs a version number
AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is not one fixed method. Microsoft’s Xbox GDK sample distinguishes FSR 1, a spatial upscaler that works from a current anti-aliased image, from FSR 2, a temporal approach that uses multiple inputs and replaces temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) in the game pipeline. In that sample, Microsoft says FSR 2 can produce significantly higher image quality than FSR 1 at higher upscaling ratios, while requiring more compute work. That is a description of those versions in that sample, not a ranking against QSSR or DLSS.
The sample is compatible with the March 2024 Update 1 Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) and includes Xbox Series X|S implementation details. It should not be read as a description of every Xbox game or every current FSR implementation. AMD’s GPUOpen material says Xbox developers can access FSR 1 and FSR 2 through the Xbox GDK; it does not establish a single upscaler used by every Xbox title.

Later FSR options are not the same implementation
AMD’s FSR overview also describes later machine-learning-based options. It says FSR versions appear in select games, require developer integration, and are supported on select AMD products. For some games with FSR 3.1 or higher integration, AMD also describes enablement through AMD Software. So “FSR” alone does not tell you whether a game uses a spatial, temporal, or later ML-based implementation, or how that version was integrated.
What DLSS includes—and what it does not mean
NVIDIA describes Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) as a suite of neural-rendering features powered by RTX Tensor Cores. For an upscaling comparison, the relevant feature is DLSS Super Resolution: it reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution game data. NVIDIA says DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution introduced a second-generation transformer model; its January 2026 announcement describes the model using game-engine pixel sampling and motion data.

Other DLSS features do different jobs. Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation create additional frames; Ray Reconstruction processes ray-traced effects; and DLAA is an anti-aliasing option rather than an upscaling mode. Treating all of these as “DLSS upscaling” obscures what is actually enabled and makes performance comparisons misleading.
Hardware support also depends on the feature. NVIDIA lists Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. Do not infer that every DLSS feature works on every RTX GPU just because Super Resolution support is broader; check the exact game feature and graphics card generation.

What a fair QSSR, FSR, and DLSS comparison must control
There is no controlled cross-platform test in the cited announcements and technical material that establishes which of the three produces the best image. A meaningful comparison has to be made in a particular game, with its implementation and settings identified. These technologies do not necessarily receive the same source image, run on equivalent hardware, or solve precisely the same problem.

Which option makes sense for your platform?
- On PS5: QSSR is relevant only in games that integrate and expose it. Sony’s announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles being patched to offer the option; verify a game’s current support in its settings or patch notes.
- On PS5 Pro: PSSR and its upgraded release are the Sony technologies described for that console. QSSR’s faster-tier positioning for PS5 is not evidence that it replaces PSSR on PS5 Pro.
- On an Xbox or PC using FSR: Identify the FSR version and game implementation. Spatial FSR 1, temporal FSR 2, and later ML-based options should not be treated as interchangeable.
- On a PC using DLSS: Check whether the game supports Super Resolution and whether the specific DLSS feature you want—such as Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation—is supported by your GPU.
For an actual image-quality decision, use the same game and comparable output settings where possible, inspect moving scenes as well as still images, and keep frame generation separate from the upscaler choice. Without those controls, a platform-to-platform verdict says more about the combined game, hardware, and settings than about the upscaling method by itself.
