PlayStation Plus vs. Xbox Game Pass: Which Subscription Is Better for Your Library?

There is no universal winner: PlayStation Plus is the better fit if you play on PS4 or PS5 and want Sony’s monthly games and catalog; Xbox Game Pass is stronger if you want a broad library across Xbox, PC and supported devices, or care about day-one releases. The useful comparison is not just the advertised game count—it is which plan works on your hardware and includes the games you want to play now.

Which service fits your library?

Your priority Better starting point Why
You play on PS4 or PS5 and want Sony’s catalog PlayStation Plus Extra Extra includes the Game Catalog along with Essential benefits.
You want day-one releases or play on console and PC Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Ultimate includes day-one games and a library listed across console, PC and supported devices.
You play only on PC and want day-one releases PC Game Pass It is the PC-only option and includes day-one titles.
You mainly want online multiplayer at a lower monthly price Compare Essential tiers Both services offer an entry tier with online multiplayer, but neither entry tier is equivalent to a full catalog plan.
You want a specific game Check both live catalogs Availability varies by plan, platform, region and time; a headline count cannot confirm that your game is included.

These are starting points, not guarantees of value for every player. Check the live catalog for your priority games and confirm that each is available on your device and tier.

US monthly prices and plan differences

The following displayed monthly prices and vendor-advertised library counts are from the official US service pages accessed October 4, 2026. They can change, and the game counts are not a stable census of titles available to every subscriber.

Service and tier Displayed US monthly price What the official listing includes
PlayStation Plus Essential $10.99 Monthly games, online multiplayer and core benefits; no Extra Game Catalog access is stated.
PlayStation Plus Extra $16.99 Essential benefits, the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics.
PlayStation Plus Premium $19.99 Extra benefits, Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog.
Xbox Game Pass Essential $9.99 50+ advertised games, online console multiplayer and in-game benefits; no day-one new releases.
Xbox Game Pass Premium $14.99 200+ advertised games, online multiplayer, and select Xbox-published games within one year of launch.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate $22.99 500+ advertised games across console, PC and supported devices; day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics.
PC Game Pass $13.99 300+ advertised PC games, day-one titles and EA Play; PC-only.

PlayStation lists three- and twelve-month durations as well as monthly pricing on its US page. The Xbox counts and benefits are the current descriptions on its US page, not promises that every listed title is available in every region, on every platform or for every plan. See PlayStation’s US plan page and Xbox’s US Game Pass page for current terms.

How the PlayStation Plus tiers affect your game library

Essential: monthly games, not the Extra catalog

Essential includes monthly games and online multiplayer. Sony’s plan description does not include access to the Extra Game Catalog at this tier. Essential can make sense if those monthly selections and core benefits match how you play, but do not choose it expecting the Extra catalog.

Extra: the main catalog tier

Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics to Essential benefits. For a PS4 or PS5 player primarily looking for a library of games to browse, this is the relevant tier to compare with Xbox’s catalog plans.

Premium: classics, trials and streaming

Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming to Extra’s benefits. Sony says most catalog titles can be downloaded, while classic PS3 games are streaming-only; streaming is available for eligible catalog games. Premium is worth considering when those specific features matter to you, rather than simply because it is the highest tier.

Sony’s monthly games are not the same benefit as Xbox’s day-one release access. Xbox lists day-one titles for Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while Premium receives select Xbox-published games within a year and Essential excludes day-one new releases.

How Xbox Game Pass tiers affect your game library

Essential and Premium: narrower than Ultimate

Xbox’s US listing advertises 50+ games for Essential and 200+ for Premium. Essential does not include day-one new releases. Premium includes select Xbox-published games within one year of release, rather than the day-one access listed for Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Ultimate: the broadest listed Xbox option

Ultimate is the Xbox tier to examine if you want its advertised console, PC and supported-device reach, day-one titles, and listed benefits including EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Whether all of that is useful depends on the devices you use and the games or services you actually want.

PC Game Pass: PC-only scope

PC Game Pass is listed at a lower monthly price than Ultimate and offers day-one titles and EA Play, but it is a PC-only plan. It is the more direct comparison if you do not need Ultimate’s console-oriented or broader device benefits.

Do you keep games after they leave or you cancel?

No: a subscription catalog is access, not permanent ownership. Xbox’s official FAQ says subscribers can access games until the subscription is canceled or expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library. PlayStation likewise ties monthly selections to an active membership, and its Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles can have end dates when they leave the service. Access therefore depends on the relevant membership and the game remaining eligible.

If you want lasting access to a particular game, check its current catalog status and store purchase option instead of assuming the subscription makes it yours. Xbox explains its access terms in the official Game Pass FAQ; PlayStation lists its plan and catalog terms on its US plan page.

Choose by your games and actual play habits

  1. Start with your hardware. PlayStation Plus catalog use is documented for PS4 and PS5. Xbox lists console, PC and supported devices, with plan and regional limits. Do not pay for platform access you will not use.
  2. Look up your priority games in both live catalogs. Confirm the title is currently included, available in your region, supported on your device and covered by the tier you are considering. Check any announced leaving date.
  3. Compare equivalent benefits. For a catalog, compare PlayStation Extra or Premium with Xbox plans that meet your platform needs. For online multiplayer at a lower monthly price, compare Essential tiers while remembering they do not provide equivalent catalog access.
  4. Pay for the feature you will use. Consider PlayStation Premium if classics, trials or streaming matter; consider Xbox Ultimate if its day-one access or broader listed device scope matters. For PC-only play, evaluate PC Game Pass rather than assuming you need Ultimate.
  5. Recheck price and terms before subscribing. Prices, benefits, regional availability and catalogs can change. The figures above are displayed US monthly rates accessed October 4, 2026, not universal prices.

Verdict: which subscription is better for your library?

Choose PlayStation Plus Extra if your library and play time are centered on PS4 or PS5 and you want Sony’s Game Catalog. Choose Premium only when its additional classics, trials or streaming are useful. Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if day-one releases and a broad console/PC/device listing are priorities; choose PC Game Pass if you want the day-one PC offering without a console plan. When one or two specific games matter most, their current catalog and device availability—not the bigger advertised number—should decide it.
