Secure the part that is actually loose before buying a new mount. A stronger arm cannot fix a desk that rocks, and a reinforcement plate only helps when the clamp area is the problem.
Find where the movement starts
Watch the display, mount, desktop, and desk frame while you gently press the desk or move its height controls. Notice whether the screen moves on its own, the entire desktop bounces, or the desk rocks against the floor. That distinction determines which fix is likely to help.
- Only the screen or stand moves: inspect the stand connections or monitor-arm joints.
- The mount shifts against the desktop: inspect its clamp or grommet and the surface beneath it.
- The desktop and screen move together: check the desk surface, frame, and floor contact before changing monitor hardware.
- The desk rocks as a whole: check leveling, floor contact, and frame fasteners.
Check cable slack as you move the screen or adjust the desk. A taut cable can tug on the display or arm, especially across the full travel of a height-adjustable desk.
Fix a rocking desk before the monitor hardware
If the entire desk shifts or bounces, inspect whether it sits level and whether its frame and fasteners are secure. Correct floor contact or leveling issues and tighten intended frame fasteners as needed. If the desktop or frame flexes substantially, address that support problem first; replacing the stand or arm will not stop the desk itself from moving.

Check a standard monitor stand
Inspect both connections: where the display meets the stand and where the stand column meets its base. Follow the assembly instructions for your exact monitor rather than assuming all stands use the same fasteners or attachment method. LG notes that hand-tightened stand screws may not be fully secure and recommends using a hand screwdriver or coin for its stand fasteners. Tighten only the intended screws; do not force them or guess at substitute hardware. LG’s stand assembly guidance explains its recommendations.
Stand designs differ even within one manufacturer’s range. LG’s guide distinguishes screw-mounted, one-click, and clamp-mounted Ergo stands. For the one-click design described there, seat the top of the stand body in the upper slot, then press the lower part until it clicks. For its clamp-style Ergo stand, fit the clamp to the desktop thickness and tighten the handle underneath. Check a monitor arm, clamp, or grommet
Make sure the clamp or grommet is fully seated and secure, then check the arm joints and VESA fasteners. The desktop should be solid where the mount attaches and within the mount’s permitted thickness and strength requirements. For a gas-spring arm, use its manual to set tension for the screen’s weight; incorrect tension can make positioning unstable.
Fellowes identifies loose fittings and joints as possible causes of instability and screen shake, and advises checking desk thickness and strength, mount fit, and screen weight before installation. Its monitor-arm installation guidance covers those checks.

If the base shifts, the clamp or grommet may need tightening, or the desk material may be compressing or slipping under load. SIIG recommends retightening and checking the mounting surface. If the mount leans because the desk lacks structural integrity, its guidance suggests an adjustable reinforcement plate or moving the mount to a stronger desk. A plate is relevant when the clamp area flexes or compresses; it is not a remedy for a desk frame or floor that rocks. See SIIG’s troubleshooting guidance and its clamp and mounting-surface guidance.
Choose a different mounting method only if it fits the problem

These are qualitative tradeoffs, not a guarantee that a particular mount will eliminate movement. KTC discusses them in its mounting-solutions comparison.

Check compatibility before replacing an arm or mount
Before buying a replacement, compare the mount’s specifications with the monitor and desk. Check:
- Monitor fit: the screen’s weight must fall within the mount’s supported range, and its VESA mounting pattern must match.
- Desktop fit: the desktop thickness must be within the clamp range, with enough underside clearance for installation.
- Desk strength: the surface and underlying structure must support the clamp or grommet without compressing or slipping.
- Movement needs: decide whether the screen must move with a sit-stand desk or can stay fixed independently.
- Point of movement: match the remedy to the loose stand, shifting clamp, flexing desktop, unstable frame, or floor contact you identified.
If the stand is loose, start with its manual and fasteners. If a clamp is secure but the desktop compresses beneath it, consider reinforcement or a stronger mounting location. If the desk itself rocks, stabilize the desk before changing how the monitor attaches.
