For a newcomer comparing the Deck with an ASUS ROG Ally, the model matters: the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X and 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 are different devices, and neither Windows nor Steam branding guarantees that every game will work.

Start with the games and services you actually use, not the logo or a single headline specification. What are the differences between the Deck OLED and the ROG Xbox Ally models?
“ROG Ally” can refer to several generations. The original ROG Ally X tested in some older reviews is not the same device as the ROG Xbox Ally X released in 2025, and neither is the 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20. The table below keeps those named models separate. ASUS’s cited specification pages are regional listings, so check the device’s local listing and availability before buying.

Screen specifications describe different trade-offs, not a universal winner. The 2025 Ally X prioritizes a 1080p, 120 Hz IPS display with VRR; the Deck OLED has an OLED panel at a lower resolution and refresh ceiling. The 2026 X20 combines OLED with a 1080p resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Whether those differences matter more than game compatibility or interface depends on what you play.

Will your games, launchers, and online services work?
Check the exact title before choosing
On Steam Deck, check the current Steam compatibility label for each game you care about. Valve says the Deck can run non-Steam games through Proton, but that does not mean every title or launcher works smoothly. On a Windows handheld, Windows support gives access to Windows-native software and storefronts, but it does not guarantee that every game, launcher, controller setup, or anti-cheat system will behave as you expect.
- Look up your essential games individually, especially multiplayer titles with anti-cheat, always-online games, and games tied to a non-Steam storefront.
- Confirm that the required launcher and online service support the specific handheld setup; do not treat a platform’s overall game library as proof about one title.
- For Game Pass, distinguish between locally installed PC games and cloud play. Xbox says the Ally line can access Xbox and Game Pass where available, along with installed games from other PC stores. Xbox Wire
Offline play and streaming are different cases

Xbox describes local play for installed PC games, Xbox Play Anywhere for supported titles, remote play from an Xbox console, and Xbox Cloud Gaming where available. Which one is easier for a newcomer?
If you mainly want to pick up a handheld, find a Steam game, and play, the Deck OLED is the safer starting recommendation. Valve describes SteamOS features such as quick suspend/resume, and its two haptic trackpads can help with pointer-style input when a game or desktop task is awkward with sticks alone. A Windows handheld is a better fit if Windows is part of the requirement rather than an optional convenience: for example, you depend on a particular Windows launcher or app, or your gaming routine is tied to Xbox services. Windows offers broader access to Windows software, but a newcomer should be comfortable navigating a PC operating system on a small screen. Xbox says one goal for the Ally was to deliver an Xbox experience in handheld form; that is a design intention, not independent proof that every task is simpler. Xbox Wire
How long do they last on battery?
Battery capacity is not the same as play time. Valve estimates 3–12 hours for the Deck OLED depending on content, while ASUS lists an 80 Wh battery for both Ally models in the comparison table. ASUS does not give a runtime estimate on the cited spec pages, so capacity alone cannot establish how long either Windows device will last in a particular game.

A separate test illustrates how much workload and settings can matter, but it should not be generalized to newer Ally models: Tom’s Guide reported 1 hour 25 minutes for its Steam Deck OLED and 2 hours 14 minutes for the older ROG Ally X while running Cyberpunk 2077 under that review’s test setup. Prices change by market and date, so compare the live local price of the exact model rather than treating old launch or news figures as current offers. Xbox’s September 2025 US launch announcement gave estimated retail prices of $599.99 for the base ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Those figures are launch context, not a current quote. Xbox Wire Windows Central reported a US Steam Deck OLED price of $789.99 in an article dated May 28, 2026; that is also a dated report, not a guaranteed current price. Storage expansion is model-specific. Valve lists microSD support for Steam Deck; ASUS lists UHS-II microSD for the 2025 Ally X and microSD Express for the 2026 X20.
