FUR Squadron Phoenix and the 2026 Star Fox for Switch 2 both put you in the middle of on-rails space combat, but they build very different games around that action. Phoenix layers roguelite runs, unlockable abilities and upgrades onto its shooting; Star Fox offers a 15-stage campaign with branching routes. Choose based on whether you want run-to-run progression or a defined campaign to revisit and explore.
At a glance: run-based progression or branching campaign?
| What to compare | FUR Squadron Phoenix | Star Fox (Switch 2, 2026 release) |
|---|---|---|
| Core format | On-rails shooter with roguelite runs; Update 2.0 also adds Full Range Combat missions. | Rail shooter built around a defined campaign with branching paths. |
| What drives replay | Shuffled runs, unlockable abilities, skill trees, weapons and stat upgrades. | Branching routes, stage variation and revisiting levels; the reviewed campaign has 15 stages. |
| Vehicles and combat | Steam describes battles against fleets and large bosses across space, air and sea, with weapons including beams and multi-missile attacks. | Primarily Arwing flight, with stages using the Landmaster and Blue-Marine. |
| Control options | The cited storefront listings do not establish specific supported input options or an independently assessed control feel. | The review describes dual-stick flight, Joy-Con Mouse Mode and play with a Switch 2 Pro Controller. |
| Platforms in the cited listings | PC on Steam and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on the Nintendo Australia eShop. | The comparison here concerns the Switch 2 release covered by the review. |
These are useful comparisons within the on-rails shooter genre, not interchangeable versions of the same game: Phoenix emphasizes the variability of individual runs, while Star Fox gives its campaign a fixed stage structure and route choices.
How Phoenix’s roguelite structure works
FUR Squadron Phoenix combines on-rails shooting with a run-based progression loop. Its listed features include shuffled runs, unlockable abilities, skill trees, weapons and stat upgrades. The result, as described by the game’s Steam listing, is progression tied to building and changing your capabilities across runs rather than simply advancing through one fixed sequence of stages. Steam’s official Phoenix page also describes large bosses and fleets across space, air and sea, and weapons such as beams and multi-missile attacks.
Update 2.0 adds a different kind of mission
Phoenix is not limited to its on-rails format: Update 2.0 introduced a Full Range Combat campaign. That gives the game another mode alongside its roguelite levels, although the available source does not establish enough detail to compare that campaign’s length or structure directly with Star Fox’s 15 stages.

How Star Fox’s branching campaign differs
The Switch 2 Star Fox reviewed by Tom’s Guide has 15 stages and branching paths. Its replay appeal comes from exploring routes and revisiting levels to see different parts of the campaign, rather than Phoenix’s shuffled runs and upgrade-driven variation. The review also describes Arwing flight as the main activity, with additional Landmaster and Blue-Marine stages. Anthony Spadafora’s June 24, 2026 review calls it “a triumphant return for Fox McCloud and a spectacular technical showcase for the new console”; that is the reviewer’s verdict, not a guarantee of every player’s experience.
Switch 2 control choices
The review describes dual-stick flight and a Joy-Con Mouse Mode, as well as the option to play with a Switch 2 Pro Controller. Spadafora reports responsive controls, which is a hands-on judgment from that review rather than a measured comparison with Phoenix. The cited Phoenix product pages do not provide equivalent control testing, so there is no sound basis here for declaring one game’s controls better.
