Why FPS per Watt Matters for Handheld Gaming

FPS per watt can clarify handheld gaming efficiency—but only when the game, settings, power measurement, and test conditions are stated.

FPS per watt helps show how much game performance a handheld delivers for the power it uses. Higher efficiency can mean more frames at a given power level—or the same playable frame rate while drawing less power. But the ratio is useful only when you know what “watt” measures and how the game was tested: processor TDP is not the same as total device power or battery drain.

What FPS per watt tells you—and what it doesn’t

A simple efficiency ratio is average frames per second divided by power in watts. For a meaningful result, the FPS and watt readings must come from the same game workload, and the power measurement boundary must be disclosed. A figure based on processor power answers a different question from one based on power drawn by the whole handheld.

FPS per watt is not a universal score for a device. A handheld may be more efficient in one game or at one resolution, yet less efficient in another. Nor does a higher average FPS automatically mean smoother play: frame pacing and whether the device can hold a target such as 30, 40, or 60 FPS also matter.

Know which watts are being compared

APU TDP is not whole-device power

AMD lists configurable TDP ranges for handheld processors, including 9–30 W for Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme and 15–35 W for Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Z2 Extreme. These are processor operating ranges, not measurements of the handheld’s total power draw. Dividing FPS by one of these settings can be useful only if the result is explicitly labeled as FPS per watt of configured APU TDP; it should not be presented as whole-device FPS per watt. AMD’s handheld processor specifications also describe FSR as in-game upscaling and frame generation for supported games and products.

Whole-device power needs a measurement method

Battery power, wall power, and configured APU TDP are different boundaries. A comparison must say which one it uses and how it was measured. If the aim is to understand battery use, measure the handheld’s draw during gameplay rather than treating the processor’s configured TDP as a direct proxy for battery consumption. Report the raw FPS and watt readings alongside any calculated ratio.

Why the test setup changes the answer

Two efficiency figures are comparable only when the workload and settings are sufficiently alike. Record the game and scene, resolution, graphics preset, frame cap, upscaling or frame-generation settings, power mode, and whether the handheld is plugged in. Brightness and display refresh rate matter especially when interpreting battery runtime.

Manufacturer charts can describe a narrow operating condition rather than battery-mode efficiency. For example, ASUS says its original ROG Ally FPS charts use Turbo mode at 30 W while plugged in, with the FPS limiter and V-Sync off. It lists the games and resolution or quality presets, and warns that configuration and driver maturity can change results. Those charts are not a measure of how efficiently the Ally runs on battery. ASUS’s Ally performance-test details identify the chart conditions.

Review results also depend on the test protocol and software at the time. They can illustrate how a device responds to different settings, but they do not establish a current, general ranking across handhelds.

Why FPS does not scale directly with power

More power can raise performance, but not by a fixed amount across games or power modes. In Tom’s Guide’s ROG Xbox Ally X testing, Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p Ultra with no resolution scaling averaged 11.9 FPS in 17 W Performance mode and 16.6 FPS in 35 W Turbo mode. In the same review, Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p Medium recorded 20.3 FPS and 21.9 FPS in those modes, while Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p High recorded 26 FPS and 30 FPS. These are workload-specific review results, not total-device FPS-per-watt measurements; the frame-rate change was different from game to game. Tom’s Guide’s ROG Xbox Ally X review provides the stated test figures.

That variation is why a single game cannot establish which handheld is generally more efficient. A useful comparison holds the game, scene, resolution, quality settings, and image-enhancement options constant, then measures performance and power together.

Efficiency and battery life are related, but not interchangeable

Battery capacity tells you how much energy a battery stores, not how long a particular game will run. Valve specifies a 40 Wh onboard battery for Steam Deck and estimates approximately 7–8 hours for lighter activities such as streaming, smaller 2D games, or web browsing; it describes several hours of play for most games. The lighter-use estimate should not be treated as a demanding-game runtime or as a matched comparison with another handheld. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware specifications identify the capacity and usage estimate. ASUS lists a 40 Wh battery for the original ROG Ally. ASUS’s 2023 Ally announcement also specifies its 65 W USB-C PD 3.0 adapter.

Runtime depends on the whole setup: game load, brightness, refresh rate, resolution, frame cap, power mode, and background activity. Tom’s Hardware reported around two hours in original Ally examples tested at 720p, about 50% brightness, and a 60 FPS ceiling; a Rocket League session using the display’s higher refresh-rate capability lasted around 1:30. Its separate PCMark gaming battery test returned 1:43. These results belong to those review protocols, not every game session or current software configuration. Tom’s Hardware’s original ROG Ally review describes its testing and settings.

How to make an efficiency comparison

  1. Choose a playable target. Decide whether you want a stable 30, 40, or 60 FPS experience rather than maximizing the counter without regard to power.
  2. Fix the workload. Use the same game build and scene, resolution, graphics preset, frame cap, and upscaling or frame-generation settings on each device.
  3. Match operating conditions. Use comparable power modes, display brightness, refresh rates, and plugged-in or battery states.
  4. Measure power at the stated boundary. For a battery-focused comparison, measure whole-device power during the same workload. Keep APU TDP results separate and label them accordingly.
  5. Report the raw results. Give average FPS and watts, the measurement method, and the resulting ratio. Include frame-time behavior or stability when the test supports it.
  6. Report runtime separately. Battery capacity in Wh and measured play time answer different questions from instantaneous FPS per watt; compare runtime only under the same workload and conditions.

Do not mix a plugged-in FPS result with a battery-power reading, or compare one device’s processor TDP with another device’s measured whole-device draw. Either mismatch can produce a ratio that looks precise but answers no fair comparison.

Settings to try when you want longer play

  • Set a frame cap at the highest target the game can sustain comfortably; lowering an unnecessarily high target can reduce power use.
  • If the handheld cannot hold that target, reduce resolution or graphics quality and check the result in the game you actually play.
  • Lower screen brightness and avoid a refresh rate higher than you need. Tom’s Hardware specifically identified a 30 FPS lock and reduced brightness as ways to extend original Ally play time in its testing.
  • Use upscaling only when the game and device support it, and judge image quality as well as the FPS counter.
  • Recheck each title: a setting that improves efficiency in one game may not produce the same result in another.
