A useful Game of the Year scorecard makes three different signals visible: what professional critics think, how players rate a game, and how widely it has been adopted. Score them separately, disclose how each was measured, then combine them using weights chosen before you see the result. The total is a transparent editorial comparison—not an objective measure of quality.
Set the rules before comparing games
Choose eligibility and evidence rules before looking at which title comes out on top. That reduces the temptation to adjust cutoffs, platforms, or weights to favor a preferred game.
- Release-year cutoff: State which release year qualifies. Specify how you treat ports, remasters, expansions, early access, and games released on different dates in different regions.
- Platforms: List the platforms included. If a game’s critic or player data come from only one platform while another game has broader coverage, show that difference rather than implying an even comparison.
- Collection date: Record the date you capture ratings, review totals, and sales figures. These can change after launch.
- Missing data: Decide in advance whether a game with unavailable or incomparable data is excluded, shown without an overall score, or evaluated through a clearly disclosed alternative. Do not silently estimate a value or assign a neutral score.
Use one consistent set of eligibility rules for every candidate. If a source’s data do not match those rules, label the limitation or leave that measure unscored.
Choose weights and calculate the score
A practical starting point is to give critics 40%, players 35%, and sales or reach 25%. These are editorial choices, not an industry standard. Publish them before naming a winner, and explain why they reflect your publication’s priorities.

Convert each dimension to the same 0–100 scale, then apply the weights:
Overall score = (critics × 0.40) + (players × 0.35) + (sales/reach × 0.25)
For example, if a game scores 90 for critics, 80 for players, and 60 for reach, its result is 90 × 0.40 + 80 × 0.35 + 60 × 0.25 = 79. The arithmetic is simple; the judgment lies in defining comparable inputs and deciding what deserves weight.

Check whether the result depends on your weights
Run the calculation again with at least one reasonable alternative weighting and report whether the top-ranked game changes. For instance, a publication focused primarily on player experience might give players more weight, while one assessing critical consensus might emphasize critics. State the alternate weights and resulting winner or ranking; do not present a sensitivity check as proof that one formula is universally right.

Name the review set or aggregator, its collection date, the number of reviews, and the platforms covered. A score based on a large, cross-platform review set is not directly equivalent to one drawn from a small or platform-specific set. Keep the coverage information beside the critic score.
Do not treat one outlet’s review as a consensus. If you use an aggregate, explain what it represents and make clear that it summarizes the selected reviews—not every critic, player, or way of experiencing the game.

Show player ratings with their sample size
For each player-rating figure, record the platform, rating scale, number of ratings, and collection date. Display the rating count next to the average. An average supported by few ratings should not look as certain as the same average supported by many.
Ratings may reflect different platform audiences, game versions, or points in a release’s lifecycle. A single platform score should not be presented as the view of all players. Keep those qualifications attached to the figure, and treat aggregated critic and user scores as evidence rather than a complete account of player experience. Research discussing critic and user-score aggregates notes that they can miss the complexity of that experience and mislead in some cases. Read the discussion of critic and user scores.
Define what sales or reach means
Sales measure commercial adoption, not design quality or player satisfaction. Before assigning a score, name the source, geography, time window, and formats covered—for example, whether a figure concerns one country or several, a particular period or lifetime, and physical copies, digital sales, or both. Describe any gaps. Do not compare figures with different scopes as though they were like-for-like.

Awards illustrate why commercial data need context. The Japan Game Awards 2024 says that sales volume is used as an evaluation reference at the judging session, and notes that numerical data from inside and outside Japan may be referenced depending on award type. Three numbers can show where a game ranks, but they cannot fully explain why. Add a qualitative checklist to guide discussion of craft. The Japan Game Awards 2024 names six areas: design, programming, graphics, sound, scenario, and originality. Treat these as prompts, not a demand that every game excel equally in every area. - Design: How do mechanics, pacing, and player choices work together?
- Programming: How reliably does the game perform, and how well does its technical implementation support play?
- Graphics: How do visual choices serve the game’s identity and readability?
- Sound: How do music, effects, and voice contribute to the experience?
- Scenario: How effectively are story, characters, and world presented, where relevant?
- Originality: What feels distinctive in its ideas or execution?
Use concise observations tied to each game. If a category is not relevant to a particular title, say so rather than forcing an artificial comparison.

Why awards use different methods
Existing awards make different institutional choices; their processes are examples, not evidence of a universally correct weighting system. The Japan Game Awards considers craft areas and uses voting results and sales volume as references in selecting its Grand Award and Award for Excellence. The Game Awards describes a jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets for nominations and separately allows fan voting. The D.I.C.E. Awards uses developer voting; its rules say, “In each awards category, game developers rank up to three of their favorite nominated games in order of preference.” Japan Game Awards selection criteria, The Game Awards FAQ, and D.I.C.E. The Game Awards’ FAQ states that its jury includes over 100 global media and influencer outlets; the page is undated, so that figure should not be attached to a guessed award year. Award rules can change, so identify the edition and consult the applicable rules when describing a particular year’s process. The Game Awards FAQ.
Present the scorecard so readers can audit it
For every eligible title, show the release date and platforms alongside the three inputs, the overall score, and the information needed to judge comparability. A useful table can include:
- Critic score, review-set name, review count, platforms covered, and collection date.
- Player average, rating platform and scale, rating count, and collection date.
- Sales or reach figure, source, geography, time period, and format coverage.
- Eligibility notes and craft observations.
When a value is unavailable, label it as unavailable and apply your predeclared missing-data policy. Do not let a blank cell conceal an estimate or make two differently scoped figures appear directly comparable. A reader should be able to see whether a title ranks highly because of critical consensus, player enthusiasm, commercial reach, or some combination of them.
What the final ranking can—and cannot—say
A blended scorecard is a reproducible way to organize evidence, not a verdict detached from editorial judgment. The weights determine how competing signals trade off; the source choices determine which critics, players, and markets are represented. Publish both. A strong result is one readers can inspect, recalculate, and interpret with its coverage and limitations in view.
