Master Chief is John-117, a Spartan-II born on Eridanus II on March 7, 2511. His story begins before the first Halo game: the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach introduces his origins and leads into the events surrounding the discovery of the first Halo ring. The dates below are major guideposts, not a complete chronology of every game, novel, comic, or other story.
Who is Master Chief?
Master Chief is the familiar name for John-117, a senior enlisted member of the UNSC and a Spartan-II. Halo’s official character overview gives his birthworld as Eridanus II and his date of birth as March 7, 2511. It describes him as a capable infantry tactician and a leader of units ranging from fireteams to battalions.
What was John-117’s backstory?
The SPARTAN-II program
John’s early career was shaped by SPARTAN-II training. The program was initially created to suppress human rebellion and help stop a mounting civil war—not solely to fight the Covenant, which later became the defining enemy of his story. An early mission involved locating and extracting Insurrectionist leader Colonel Robert Watts.
Where The Fall of Reach fits
Halo: The Fall of Reach is the origin-focused novel to start with if you want the story behind the Spartan and the events leading toward the first game. Halo’s official book guide dates its original release to October 30, 2001, before Halo: Combat Evolved. That is a publication date, not an event in the fictional chronology.

This is a selective chronology of useful anchors. Halo’s story spans games, novels, comics, and other media, so these entries do not account for every event or every release.
