Nintendo did not formally recall the games discussed here. The documented stories are two controversies around Nintendo 3DS titles: criticism of Tomodachi Life’s relationship system in 2014, and changes to the Western localization of Fire Emblem Fates. They illustrate different issues and responses; they are selected examples, not a proven ranking of the era’s “most controversial” games. The evidence summarized here does not establish a comparable Wii U case.
Did Nintendo recall controversial 3DS or Wii U games?
No formal recall of either game is established by the cited coverage. In this context, “recalls” is best understood as “looks back on,” not as Nintendo withdrawing a game from sale or asking owners to return it. The historical recall coverage that surfaced concerned hardware accessories—Wii Remote strap replacements and DS power adapters—not the 3DS game controversies discussed below: Game Developer’s report.
The two documented examples are both Nintendo 3DS games. They are not a definitive “most controversial” ranking: the available accounts do not define a ranking method or establish a complete list. Nor does the available evidence here support presenting a Wii U title as an equivalent case.
Tomodachi Life: criticism of its relationship system
Nintendo’s 3DS life simulation game drew criticism in 2014 because its relationship system did not allow same-sex relationships. Nintendo told the Associated Press it had not intended the game as social commentary, as reported by Nintendo Life. The company framed the game as whimsical rather than a statement about society, but that did not resolve the criticism of who its relationship mechanics included.

Nintendo later apologized for disappointing players, saying the shipped game’s design could not be changed. In the apology reproduced by TIME on May 9, 2014, the company said: “We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life.” It also said that, if it made another installment, it would strive to create a more inclusive experience that better represented all players.
Fire Emblem Fates: a change in Western localization
Fire Emblem Fates, a Nintendo 3DS role-playing game, became controversial over changes made for its Western localization. Nintendo confirmed that the US and European release removed an expression between characters that could be understood as gay conversion or drugging. Nintendo of America’s statement, reproduced in Nintendo Life’s January 2016 coverage, said: “In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.”

That description is more precise than treating the dispute simply as “censorship”: the documented change concerns a particular scene in the US and European versions, and Nintendo’s stated rationale was that the expression could be read as gay conversion or drugging. Coverage also discussed the change as part of localization and noted same-sex relationship options in the game. See GameSpot’s coverage and Nintendo Life’s follow-up.
How the two controversies differ
| Game | Issue | Nintendo’s response described in the coverage | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomodachi Life | Its relationship system did not allow same-sex relationships. | Nintendo apologized and said the shipped design could not be changed; it pledged to strive for a more inclusive future installment. | The design of the game as shipped. |
| Fire Emblem Fates | A scene was changed because Nintendo said it could be understood as gay conversion or drugging. | Nintendo confirmed the expression was absent from the US and European release. | Western localization of a specific scene. |
The distinction matters: one dispute concerned who could form relationships within a game’s design; the other concerned how a scene was presented in particular regional versions. They should not be collapsed into a claim that Nintendo recalled either title or handled both controversies in the same way.

What this selection can—and cannot—show
These cases show two documented forms of controversy around 3DS games: criticism of an original design choice and debate over a regional localization change. The cited coverage supports those specific accounts, but it does not establish which games were the most controversial across the whole 3DS and Wii U era. It also does not provide a verified Wii U example strong enough to pair with these cases. That is a limit of this selection, not proof that no Wii U controversy occurred.
