How the two styles differ
In turn-based tactics, play is organized into discrete turns. That structure gives you a defined opportunity to assess threats and choose a response before the next turn plays out. In real-time tactics, the situation develops continuously: you observe and plan, but carrying out that plan involves timing and adapting to ongoing events.
The distinction is not simply “slow” versus “fast.” A turn-based game can still make decisions demanding, and a real-time tactics game can offer ways to plan or coordinate actions. The useful question is whether you prefer to make decisions within clear turn boundaries or while the situation is unfolding.
Turn-based tactics: deliberate decisions, one turn at a time
What it feels like
Turn-based play suits players who want time to examine the immediate problem and weigh possible moves. The pressure comes from choosing an effective action within the game’s turn structure, rather than from having to issue every command while the clock keeps moving.

Example: Into the Breach
Into the Breach’s official page describes it as a turn-based strategy game built around analyzing an opponent’s attack and finding a counter each turn. That makes it a useful example if you enjoy seeing a threat, considering your options, and solving the tactical problem through a sequence of turns. It illustrates this particular game’s loop, not a rule that defines every turn-based title.
Real-time tactics: plan, then act as events continue
What it feels like
Real-time tactics may appeal if you like executing a plan under changing conditions. Decisions involve not only what to do, but when to do it and how to adjust if enemy activity or timing alters the situation.

Example: Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
Daedalic’s fact sheet calls Shadow Tactics “Stealth-oriented Real Time Tactics” and describes a loop of observing enemies, planning an approach, and acting quickly, precisely, and undetected. It also describes planning team actions and executing them together. Ubisoft’s game page presents it as tactical stealth, featuring five specialists and missions that require evaluating options. These details make it a fitting example for players drawn to stealth, timing, and coordinated action; they do not establish that every real-time tactics game works the same way.

If you are unsure, compare a representative game from each style and notice which kind of pressure you enjoy: selecting a move inside a turn, or carrying out and adapting a plan as events continue. Treat genre labels as a starting point, then check the individual game’s description for how it handles planning and action.
