To reduce the risk, first check the selected mode and its death and save rules, then use the tactical information the game provides, limit exposure, and retreat when the cost of pressing on outweighs the mission’s likely rewards. No tactic guarantees a deathless campaign.
What permadeath means—and what it does not
Permadeath is a plain-language label, not a universal rulebook. In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Nintendo describes Classic mode as one in which a unit defeated on the battlefield is “gone for good.” In XCOM 2, the manual says a soldier killed in combat is permanently removed from the squad and cannot be resurrected. But XCOM 2 distinguishes death from a critical wound: a critically wounded soldier can heal over time and rejoin.
When checking a particular game, separate three questions that are easy to conflate:
- What happens to a defeated unit? Is the character gone permanently, temporarily unavailable, or returned after the battle?
- Can you undo a decision? Does the campaign allow a reload or turn rewind?
- Is the save locked? A separate Ironman-style mode may overwrite a single save as you play, preventing a return to an earlier state. In XCOM, the PlayStation Blog describes Ironman this way; the details vary by game.
Also check whether replacements are available and how easily a lost unit can be replaced. That is specific to each title, and the examples here do not establish a genre-wide rule. Likewise, find out whether a mission failure or retreat can preserve the rest of your squad.

Before a campaign, check its rules and choose a mode
- Read the selected mode’s description. Look for a clear statement about whether fallen units return. Three Houses explicitly identifies Classic mode’s permanent-loss stakes; do not assume another mode or game uses the same rules.
- Find out what counts as a death. A downed, critically wounded, captured, or otherwise incapacitated unit may be treated differently. XCOM 2’s critical wounds, for example, can heal; a soldier killed in combat cannot be resurrected.
- Check rewind and save behavior separately. A game can make unit death permanent while still allowing a campaign reload—or offer a no-reload mode that makes mistakes irreversible. If you choose Ironman, plan to play by that mode’s save rules rather than relying on reloads.
- Learn the mission’s failure and extraction rules. Before risking the squad, find out whether an objective can be abandoned and what an early retreat costs.
For XCOM 2 specifically, senior producer Garth DeAngelis advised players not to begin with Legend Ironman and recommended learning the campaign first. That is advice about XCOM 2, not a rule that every player must follow in every tactics game.
Use the information the game gives you
At mission start, take stock before moving: objectives, unit health, abilities, ammunition, and any visible information about enemies. During combat, treat displayed odds as probabilities, not promises. XCOM 2’s manual documents hit chances and projected damage in the targeting display; an attack with a low hit chance can miss even when the plan depends on it landing.

Use the game’s defensive systems deliberately. In XCOM 2, cover reduces the chance of being hit, high cover provides the strongest defense among cover positions, and flanked soldiers are especially vulnerable. Some tiles can also expose a unit to enemy sight, noise, or hazards, so a move that looks like progress may create danger. Other tactics games have different systems: apply their own map information, warnings, and defensive rules rather than assuming XCOM’s mechanics carry over.
Limit exposure and choose when to engage
Where a game offers concealment, use it to position the squad and decide when to initiate contact. In XCOM 2, concealment usually begins active on missions, but can break if the squad fires, enters enemy line of sight, or makes too much noise; some missions begin without it. Check the mission state instead of assuming concealment is available.

More broadly, avoid spending a unit’s safety on an uncertain attack when a safer position or a different plan is available. Account for flanks, hazards, enemy sight lines, and the possibility that a move will expose another squad member. These precautions reduce preventable risks; they cannot remove randomness, hidden information, mission-specific rules, or mistakes.

Keep recovery options and an exit plan in mind. The XCOM 2 manual describes medkits as tools for restoring health or stabilizing critical wounds, and evac as a way to extract troops. These are XCOM 2 examples; check what recovery and extraction actually do in the game you are playing.

In XCOM 2, the 2K FAQ says an available evac can be called before the mission is complete. Leaving early may cost loot, experience, or mission success parameters, so compare those losses with the risk of continuing. Retreat is not automatically the best choice, but it can preserve soldiers when the squad’s likely losses outweigh the value of pressing on.
