Yes. Fortnite’s Battle Royale and Creative modes are free to play, and buying content is optional. Save the World also became free to play on April 16, 2026. V-Bucks are Fortnite’s in-game currency: they can buy eligible cosmetics and passes, but they are not cash and cannot be exchanged for money or items outside Epic’s ecosystem.
Which parts of Fortnite are free?
Epic says Battle Royale and Creative do not require players to purchase content. You can play without buying V-Bucks, cosmetics, or a pass; purchases are optional and provide cosmetic benefits. Epic’s Fortnite FAQ describes these modes as free to play.
Save the World has a different history: Epic says it became free to play on April 16, 2026. All players can access the full experience. The way players earn certain rewards differs, however:
- Free players earn X-Ray Tickets for llamas and shop items.
- Players who bought Save the World previously as Founders retain the ability to earn V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, and Storm Shield Defense missions.

What can V-Bucks buy?
V-Bucks are virtual currency used for eligible Fortnite content. Epic lists Item Shop cosmetics such as outfits, emotes, and pickaxes, as well as Jam Tracks and passes among the possible purchases. Exact inventory and offers can vary by season, region, and platform.
Epic’s listed pass prices are:

Epic says some expired Battle Pass items may later appear in the Item Shop at least 18 months after the pass expires; that does not guarantee that any particular item will return.

V-Bucks are not real-world money
V-Bucks cannot be exchanged for cash or for goods outside Epic’s ecosystem. Epic’s End User License Agreement also warns that prices, availability, and functionality can change. Treat the currency as a way to buy eligible in-game content, not as a cash balance.
Can you get V-Bucks without paying?
Epic lists several ways to obtain V-Bucks: buy them directly, redeem a V-Bucks card, use Fortnite Crew or eligible starter and quest packs, or earn them through Free Pass and/or Battle Pass progression. All players have access to the Free Pass, and Epic says players may earn V-Bucks as they progress through its levels. The paid Battle Pass is optional.

Free Pass rewards depend on the current season. Check the in-game rewards before counting on earning enough for a specific cosmetic or pass; the available information does not establish a fixed amount a player can earn in every season. Epic also describes physical V-Bucks cards as available from authorized retailers and online. Use only authorized sources: Epic warns about suspicious external “free V-Bucks” offers and says genuine offers appear on official Epic websites, social channels, or the Epic Games Store. Will V-Bucks and purchases work across platforms?
Epic says V-Bucks bought with Epic account balance are available across platforms except Nintendo, which does not support Fortnite Shared Wallet. Items bought with V-Bucks can still appear in the Locker across platforms linked to the Epic account. Before purchasing, check that you are signed into the intended Epic account and review the rules for the platform storefront you are using. Epic explains the Shared Wallet platform exception.

- Buy nothing if you only want to play the free modes or are unsure you will use paid content.
- Choose a pass if its current rewards appeal to you and you expect to progress enough to claim them. Check the season’s contents and the pass’s current V-Bucks price first.
- Choose an Item Shop cosmetic if you want a particular available item rather than a set of seasonal rewards. Shop inventory can rotate, so check the live store.
- Check your platform and account before spending, particularly if you use Nintendo or more than one platform.
