For a convincing HD-2D-inspired look, keep Chrono Trigger’s 2D image correctly proportioned and evenly scaled, then add a restrained CRT shader. No emulator setting turns the game into a true HD-2D production with layered 3D environments: shaders only change how its existing image is displayed. If you play the Steam PC version, first compare its built-in Original graphics mode before adding post-processing.
Start with the cleanest image you want to preserve
On Steam for PC, the game offers a built-in Original graphics option alongside its high-resolution character sprites and background graphics. Square Enix describes Original as having a display style closer to the original game. It is a useful baseline for deciding whether external effects improve the image for you; it is not an HD-2D mode. See Square Enix’s Steam PC patch details.
If you are using RetroArch with the Snes9x core, begin with the core-provided aspect ratio so the game keeps its intended shape. Snes9x also documents a core-level aspect-ratio setting and an optional Blargg NTSC filter. That filter is an alternate way to soften the signal; it is not required for the CRT-shader approach below. See the Snes9x core documentation.
Set aspect ratio and scaling before adding effects
Correct proportions matter more than curvature or glow: stretching the image to fill a widescreen display makes the art look wrong, even if the shader is attractive. For pixel art, integer scaling is a good starting point because it enlarges source pixels in even multiples. Libretro notes that CRT shaders generally look better with integer scaling, although results vary by shader.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Integer scaling may leave unused space around the image, especially on a large or unusually shaped display. That is a normal tradeoff for even pixels, not a reason to stretch the game. If you prefer a larger picture, try another scale while preserving the aspect ratio, then check whether edges and scanlines still look consistent. RetroArch’s configuration documents scaling and shader-related controls in its retroarch.cfg; Libretro explains the options in its CRT shader catalog.
Use a restrained CRT shader, not a stack of blur effects
In RetroArch, turn bilinear smoothing off when using pixel shaders unless you deliberately want extra softness. RetroArch’s configuration comments advise disabling bilinear smoothing with pixel shaders; leaving both enabled can make the image softer than intended. Add softness, if wanted, through one chosen shader control rather than layering multiple smoothing effects.

CRT-Royale is a configurable option for adding screen texture and a subtle glow. Its settings include aperture-grille, slot-mask, and shadow-mask choices, along with geometry controls that can be disabled or set to spherical, alternate spherical, or cylindrical. The documented settings file shows geometry off by default and an aspect-ratio value of 1.313069909; these are shader configuration defaults, not a universal recommendation for every display. Consult Libretro’s CRT-Royale documentation and the CRT-Royale user settings.
Tune the effect in a useful order
- Fit the content. If your shader captures letterboxing or other screen elements, use CRT-Royale-ReShade’s content bounds to align the effect with the actual game image. The project says this can also help performance by letting the shader ignore part of the screen.
- Choose the mask. Start with the phosphor mask, then assess whether its pattern is visible at your viewing distance and output resolution.
- Set scanlines. Add only enough to suggest a CRT texture without darkening small sprites or dialogue.
- Adjust contrast, halation or diffusion, and bloom. Change one control at a time. A little glow can soften highlights; too much can obscure fine pixel detail.
- Decide on geometry last. Try curvature only if it suits your display and taste. A flat presentation is a valid choice, not an incomplete setup.
- Recheck gameplay. Compare a dialogue screen and a bright scene after each meaningful adjustment.
The CRT-Royale-ReShade quickstart gives mask triad width starting points of 3.0 at 1080p, 6.0 at 1440p, and 9.0 at 2160p. These are starting points from the shader guide, not tested or verified Chrono Trigger presets. Follow its quickstart for content bounds and setup details.

Choose between sharpness, texture, and performance
| Choice | What it favors | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Clean pixels with correct aspect ratio | Sharp, undistorted sprites and readable text | Less CRT texture or softness |
| Integer scaling | Evenly enlarged pixels and more consistent scanlines | Unused screen area may remain |
| Stronger scanlines, mask, or glow | A more pronounced CRT character | Darkening or glow can make fine detail and dialogue harder to read |
| Full CRT-Royale shader | More complete shader features | Potentially greater GPU demand; no performance benchmark for Chrono Trigger is established here |
| Fake-bloom or compatibility variant | Lower shader demands or improved compatibility | Some features are reduced or disabled |
Libretro describes crt-royale.cgh as the full version and crt-royale-fake-bloom.cgh as a much faster alternative. It also documents Intel compatibility presets that disable some features. The best option depends on your hardware and the look you want; the available documentation does not establish one preset as best across displays, GPUs, emulator versions, and resolutions. See Libretro’s CRT-Royale guide.
Use dialogue readability as your final check
A Steam Community discussion about Chrono Trigger, dated April 10, 2018, describes one player increasing scanline brightness because a darker effect hurt visibility, then finding that pushing it too far looked smudged. Treat that as one player’s experience, not a general preset. It illustrates why a screenshot of a bright scene is not enough: inspect faces, small sprites, and dialogue before settling on a look. The discussion is available at Steam Community.

For a simple setup, use the game’s Original mode if you are on Steam and prefer its display style; otherwise, preserve aspect ratio, use integer scaling where practical, disable bilinear smoothing with pixel shaders, and add only enough CRT effect to suit your screen. If the shader obscures dialogue or fine details, reduce its strength or return to a clean image.
