How SteamVR Controller Compatibility Works Across VR Headsets

SteamVR compatibility depends on tracking hardware and base station generation—not just whether a headset runs SteamVR. Here are the documented Index and Vive combinations and setup checks.

SteamVR support alone does not mean a headset can track every SteamVR controller. For Valve Index Controllers and Vive Wands, compatibility depends on the headset supporting SteamVR Tracking and having compatible base stations. Valve specifically lists the Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro for Index Controllers, and lists Vive and Vive Pro Wands as compatible with the Index. Check the exact headset and base station generation before buying or setting up hardware.

What makes a SteamVR controller compatible?

Compatibility has separate hardware, tracking, and software parts. A headset may run SteamVR yet lack the SteamVR Tracking hardware or receiver path needed for lighthouse-tracked controllers. Valve describes Index Controllers as compatible with headsets that support SteamVR Tracking, naming the Valve Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro. That is a named list, not a guarantee for every headset that can launch SteamVR. Valve Index Controllers

  • Tracking hardware: The headset and controllers must work with the same tracking system and compatible base stations.
  • Base station generation: Stations must be suitable for the headset and controllers, and stations from different generations cannot be combined in one setup.
  • Pairing and game input: SteamVR must pair the controller, and the game needs usable controls or bindings for it.

Which headset and controller combinations are documented?

The following combinations are specifically identified in Valve or HTC documentation; this is not an exhaustive cross-brand compatibility chart.

Combination Documented support What to check
Valve Index headset + Index Controllers Valve documents support. Index requires at least one base station; two are recommended. Use compatible stations and complete SteamVR setup. Valve Index System Requirements
Valve Index headset + Vive or Vive Pro Wands Valve says Index is compatible with both. Confirm station generation; original Vive Wands do not work with 2.0 stations. Valve Index System Requirements
HTC Vive headset + Index Controllers Valve names the HTC Vive as compatible with Index Controllers. Use compatible SteamVR Tracking base stations; original Vive hardware has a 2.0-station limitation. Valve Index Controllers
HTC Vive Pro headset + Index Controllers Valve names the HTC Vive Pro as compatible. Verify station generation and the exact Vive Pro kit. Valve Index Controllers
Index + 1.0 or 2.0 base stations Valve supports either generation with Index. Do not mix 1.0 and 2.0 stations in one VR setup. Index Base Station & Lighthouse Tracking
Original Vive headset or original Vive Wands + 2.0 stations Valve says 2.0 stations do not work with the original Vive headset or Wand controllers; HTC lists these original products for 1.0 only. Use the station generation documented for the exact original Vive hardware. Valve base station guidance; HTC VIVE base station compatibility
Vive Pro, Vive Pro Eye, Vive Pro 2, Cosmos Elite, and Cosmos with External Tracking Faceplate + base stations HTC lists these products as compatible with both station generations; the Cosmos entry requires the External Tracking Faceplate. Preserve the model and accessory qualifications in HTC’s compatibility table. HTC VIVE base station compatibility

How base station generations affect compatibility

Valve says 1.0 HTC-branded and 2.0 Valve-branded base stations will not work together in the same VR setup. Treat the stations as one generation per play space rather than assuming a newer station can be added to an older set. Valve also specifies that 2.0 stations do not work with the original Vive headset or original Vive Wands, although they do work with Vive Pro family products. HTC’s model table lists the original Vive headset and controllers for 1.0 only, while identifying several newer Vive models for both generations. Pairing, tracking, and game controls are different steps

Pair the controller in SteamVR

  1. Open SteamVR and its status window.
  2. Choose Devices > Pair Controller, then follow the on-screen pairing instructions for the Index Controller.
  3. Check the controller status in SteamVR. Valve notes that a blue controller LED means it is powered but not paired.

Pairing does not prove that tracking is ready: Valve’s Index setup guidance recommends positioning base stations toward the play area and ensuring the devices can see them. In SteamVR, a green device icon indicates readiness; complete Room Setup if it has not been done. Valve Index setup and system requirements

Check the game’s bindings

A controller can pair and track while a particular game’s controls remain unsuitable. Valve says games without native Index Controller support should map existing control schemes automatically, and SteamVR lets users configure bindings. If buttons or actions do not behave as expected, inspect the game’s SteamVR bindings rather than treating that as proof the headset cannot track the controller. What to verify before using a different headset

  1. Find the exact headset model and revision. Do not infer support from the SteamVR logo or the headset brand alone.
  2. Confirm SteamVR Tracking support for the controller. For Index Controllers, Valve’s named headset examples are Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro. For other headsets, consult that manufacturer’s exact tracking and controller documentation.
  3. Identify every base station’s generation. Keep 1.0 and 2.0 stations separate and check whether the specific headset or controller excludes a generation.
  4. Check required accessories and connections. HTC’s Cosmos compatibility listing, for example, specifies the External Tracking Faceplate. Index’s DisplayPort and USB requirements are separate from controller compatibility.
  5. After setup, verify pairing, tracking visibility, SteamVR status, and game bindings separately.

The official compatibility information cited here does not establish every third-party SteamVR-tracked headset, controller revision, or dongle and receiver configuration. For an unlisted combination, get confirmation for the precise headset and tracking hardware from its maker before purchasing or relying on it.
