For a Raspberry Pi 4 YouTube stream, start by testing H.264 at 720p30 or 1080p30 with constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30, but those are YouTube ingest recommendations—not proof that a particular Pi 4, encoder, capture source, or network can sustain them. Verify the installed encoder controls and test the complete setup before relying on it.

Recommended H.264 settings for YouTube Live

YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. AAC and MP3 are listed as audio codecs. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Output format YouTube H.264 minimum YouTube H.264 recommended When to consider it
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps A lower-demand starting point if capture, encoding, or upload capacity is limited.
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps For more detail, provided the full capture, encoding, and network path remains stable.
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps YouTube publishes these figures, but test the specific Pi configuration rather than assuming it can sustain them.
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps Not a default Pi 4 recommendation: the available evidence does not establish reliable Pi 4 encoding at this format.

These bitrates are YouTube’s platform guidance, not Pi 4 performance measurements. Choose a target with headroom for audio and network overhead; a connection that only barely reaches the video bitrate is not a sound basis for a continuous stream. YouTube advises testing with representative movement and sound and monitoring stream health.

Check that your Pi and FFmpeg can use the encoder

Encoder names and options vary with the operating system, FFmpeg package, drivers, and input path. Do not assume that a command using an old encoder such as h264_omx applies to your installation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. List the encoders available in your installed FFmpeg build with ffmpeg -encoders. Look for an H.264 encoder that matches the hardware and software path you intend to use.

  2. Inspect the selected encoder’s supported options using ffmpeg -h encoder=<encoder>, replacing <encoder> with its actual name. This is the documented FFmpeg approach to checking encoder-specific controls; do not add options your build does not expose. See FFmpeg documentation.

  3. Test the real input, audio source, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and network together. A successful encoder listing does not show that the complete stream will run reliably.

Raspberry Pi documents that rpicam-vid can use the FFmpeg/libav codec backend for audio and video, and that libav uses hardware H.264 encoding when present. Its camera documentation also includes a Pi 4B-compatible H.264 streaming workflow. These describe supported routes, not a guarantee that every OS image, FFmpeg build, capture source, or encoder option will work unchanged. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation and its streaming-video workflow.

Choose between 720p30 and 1080p30

  • Detail and encoding headroom: 1080p contains more detail, but use it only if your capture and encoder remain stable at that resolution and frame rate.
  • Upload capacity: compare sustained upload capacity with the target video bitrate plus audio and network overhead. YouTube’s minimum is not a recommended safety margin.
  • Motion: test representative movement from the real scene. Busy or fast-changing video can reveal problems that a static image does not.
  • Actual encoder controls: confirm that your chosen H.264 encoder exposes the settings you need, including bitrate and keyframe behavior.

If stability matters more than detail, test 720p30 first; move to 1080p30 only when the complete pipeline and YouTube stream health stay stable in a representative test.

Set up and test the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and select the stream settings that provide its stream key and ingest details. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.

Bitrate and camera-pipeline notes

Raspberry Pi’s documented camera bitrate option sets the H.264 target bitrate in bits per second. The documentation gives 10000000 as an example for 1920×1080 output; that example illustrates the control and is not a universal YouTube recommendation. Set the bitrate appropriate to your selected YouTube format and verify the option supported by your actual capture and encoding path. See Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid options.

A camera module is relevant only if you are using a camera-module workflow. Other capture sources have their own compatibility and audio-routing requirements; check the specific input path rather than assuming a camera command applies to it.

Troubleshooting a Pi 4 YouTube stream

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or option The installed build or encoder differs from the command’s assumptions. Run ffmpeg -encoders and ffmpeg -h encoder=<encoder>; use only a compatible encoder and options.
Frames drop or YouTube stream health degrades Capture, encoding, frame rate, resolution, or upload capacity may be insufficient for the chosen settings. Reduce resolution or frame rate, then retest. Adjust bitrate to fit stable upload headroom and monitor stream health.
The stream starts but picture or sound is unreliable The real input, audio path, or motion may not have been covered by a short or unrepresentative test. Test again with representative movement and sound, checking the local output and YouTube health indicators.
A copied command fails on a different Pi OS image Encoder and driver interfaces can vary between software packages and setups. Inspect the current FFmpeg build and encoder help instead of assuming an older command remains compatible.

Keep the YouTube stream running without leaving the Pi on

For a do-it-yourself stream, the Pi must remain powered and connected, and you are responsible for keeping its capture, encoder, and network working. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera footage. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card.

Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
