If EmuDeck controls stop responding, first identify whether you are in Game Mode or Desktop Mode, whether you are using the Steam Deck’s built-in controls or an external controller, and whether the problem affects one emulator or all of them. Those details help pinpoint whether the issue is Steam Input, controller order, or an emulator-specific setting.
Start by identifying where input fails
EmuDeck generally recommends Game Mode for playing ROMs. In Desktop Mode, hold the Steam Deck’s Start button for three seconds to switch its controller configuration to gamepad mode; EmuDeck says this also enables combo hotkeys for exiting a game. See EmuDeck’s controls and hotkeys guide.
- Desktop Mode only: switch to gamepad mode with the Start-button hold.
- Built-in controls or an external controller: note which device is affected.
- Every emulator or just one: a single-emulator issue is more likely to involve that emulator’s own input settings.
Check the Steam Input layout in Game Mode
Open the affected game or emulator’s Controller page in Game Mode and check its layout. EmuDeck provides Steam Input profiles for Cemu, Citra, DuckStation, melonDS, mGBA, PPSSPP, and RMG. Select the appropriate profile when one is available. EmuDeck notes that the Cemu and Citra profiles are needed for screen switching.
If the emulator does not have an EmuDeck profile, choose Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad. Other layouts may leave some controls unavailable. See EmuDeck’s controller layouts FAQ.

Test whether Steam Input is conflicting with a controller feature
Steam Input standardizes Steam Deck controls across emulators, but it can interfere with a feature exposed directly by an external controller, such as gyro. Disable it as a targeted test when that kind of feature is failing, rather than as a universal fix.
- In Game Mode, select the affected game, emulator, or EmulationStation-DE.
- Open its Controller page, select the controller tab, then open the gear beside Edit Layout.
- Select Disable Steam Input. Use the same menu to turn it back on.
- Restart if the change does not take effect immediately.
Disabling Steam Input can change which controls or features are available. EmuDeck specifically cites possible double inputs with the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller and suggests disabling Steam Input for the affected game; that example does not mean a new controller is a general mapping fix. Put the external controller in the right order
If Steam detects an external controller but the emulator seems to send input to the wrong player or device, rearrange the controller order:
- Open Quick Access on the external controller.
- Open Quick Settings and choose Rearrange controller order.
- Set the desired order. When using one external controller alongside the Steam Deck, EmuDeck recommends placing the external controller first.

Check the emulator’s own input settings
If the issue is limited to one emulator, inspect its input device or profile before changing Steam Input for everything. The relevant setting varies by emulator.
Ryujinx
To restore the default Steam Deck controls, open Options → Settings → Input, configure Player 1, select Steam Virtual Gamepad, load the configuration, and save. For gyro problems, EmuDeck also recommends resetting Ryujinx configuration through Manage Emulators if the earlier steps do not resolve the issue. See EmuDeck’s Ryujinx guide.

Yuzu
To restore configured Steam Deck controls, select the emudeck profile in Yuzu’s Controls settings. For external-controller gyro problems, the guide describes disabling Steam Input for the selected game; if gyro still fails, it recommends resetting Yuzu configuration through Manage Emulators.
