To map controls for an emulated game on Steam Deck, first decide which layer owns the problem: use the game’s Steam Input layout to change how Deck or controller inputs reach the emulator, or use RetroArch’s remap files to change how the emulator assigns those inputs to the emulated system. For a one-title change in RetroArch, save a Game Remap File; for a consistent change across content in a directory, save a Content Directory Remap File.
Choose the right mapping layer
Steam Input and emulator remapping do different jobs. Steam Input translates buttons and other inputs for the Steam-launched game or emulator shortcut. RetroArch then maps the inputs it receives to the controls of the emulated console. Changing one layer will not necessarily fix behavior owned by the other.
| What you want to change | Where to change it | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| How Deck or controller buttons reach a Steam-launched emulator | Steam Input layout attached to that game or emulator shortcut | That shortcut |
| How RetroArch inputs operate the emulated system | RetroArch Controls and Manage Remap Files | One game or a content directory |
For example, if a Deck button is not producing the expected input in the emulator, check the shortcut’s Steam Input layout first. If the inputs reach RetroArch but are assigned to the wrong in-game console buttons, adjust RetroArch’s controls instead. EmuDeck documents both layers in its Steam Input profiles guide and RetroArch on SteamOS guide.
Check the Steam Input layout for the affected game
- Launch the emulated game in Game Mode.
- Open the game’s controller settings with the controller icon.
- Inspect the active layout and choose the EmuDeck profile intended for that emulator if one is available.
- If there is no dedicated profile, EmuDeck’s FAQ recommends “Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad.”
Layouts are attached to individual Steam shortcuts. Check the shortcut for the game that is misbehaving rather than assuming a layout change on another game or emulator applies to it. EmuDeck’s SteamOS FAQ and profile documentation describe the available profiles.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
EmuDeck profiles can also provide emulator or frontend button combinations and radial menus. Hotkeys are profile-dependent, so consult the current breakdown for the profile in use instead of assuming one universal combination works across all emulators.
Save a RetroArch remap for one game or a directory
RetroArch remap files are useful when the mapping inside RetroArch needs to differ for one title or for content in a directory. Start the game with the relevant core so the controls you configure correspond to the content being played.

- Open RetroArch’s Quick Menu. EmuDeck documents L3 + R3 as the shortcut for opening it.
- Select Controls and configure the desired mapping.
- Open Manage Remap Files.
- Select Save Game Remap File to apply the remap to that game, or Save Content Directory Remap File for content-directory scope.
Menu labels or presentation can vary by RetroArch version; follow the current labels if they differ from these instructions. EmuDeck’s RetroArch on SteamOS documentation covers this workflow.
Troubleshoot an external controller’s gyro or buttons
External controllers can work through Steam Input, but the input path may affect whether an emulator can access a controller-specific feature. EmuDeck specifically warns that Steam Input may not expose an external controller’s gyro correctly.

- If gyro input is missing, try disabling Steam Input for the affected emulator or game so the controller can communicate its feature directly to the emulator.
- Restart the emulator or game after changing the setting if the gyro still is not available.
- If the feature works through Steam Input, there may be no reason to disable it. The better setting depends on whether the desired feature is exposed through Steam Input or the direct path.
EmuDeck’s external-controller guide describes the compatibility issue. For other missing inputs, check the affected shortcut’s Steam Input profile first, then verify the emulator’s own mapping if the inputs arrive but control the wrong actions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the Deck’s built-in controls or add a gamepad
A separate gamepad is optional; mapping controls is a software configuration task and does not require buying an accessory. Valve’s Steam Deck booklet describes the Deck as having full-size thumbsticks, two trackpads, four customizable back buttons, and a built-in gyroscope. These controls can be assigned through the appropriate Steam Input profile, depending on the emulator and the layout you choose.
