Follow the dungeon rewards, note obstacles and leads you cannot act on yet, and revisit them when Link gains a new ability. If you want full completion or the special no-death ending, track those as separate goals. Switch-version references report that none of its 50 Secret Seashells are permanently missable.
Choose your goal before you start collecting

What counts as “100%” can vary by checklist, so decide which optional categories matter to you rather than assuming the story’s finale marks the end of every collection.
Use the Switch map and conversation review to manage backtracking
The Switch version adds ways to review key conversations and navigate the map, according to Nintendo’s product page. Nintendo’s tips also recommend revisiting important conversations and checking key locations. Treat the map as a memory aid: note suspicious obstacles, unexplored entrances, and NPC requests, then return when your inventory changes.
- If a gap, block, or other obstacle stops you, record its location instead of repeatedly trying to cross it.
- If an NPC asks for something you do not have, remember the request and check it again as the trading sequence advances.
- Ask Old Man Ulrira for telephone hints when you are unsure where to go next; Nintendo includes his calls among its tips.
This method helps you find optional rewards without mistaking every blocked path for a missed item or a broken save.

Follow dungeon rewards as your main route
The game’s progression is ability-gated: dungeon items let Link deal with obstacles that previously stopped him. A useful route is therefore less about clearing every visible side path immediately and more about taking each dungeon reward back into the overworld.
- Clear the next accessible dungeon. Gather its map, compass, keys, and other required items, then defeat its boss and claim its Instrument of the Sirens.
- Test the new reward against remembered obstacles. Return to places where you saw an impassable route, or continue toward the next lead if no remembered location fits.
- Check newly accessible areas for story leads and optional finds. Speak with characters, inspect entrances, and add unresolved requests to your map notes.
- Repeat until you have all eight Instruments. The official objective is to explore Koholint Island, uncover its truth, and rouse the Wind Fish, as described by Nintendo.
The Switch walkthrough reviewed for this guide is organized from Tail Cave through the finale, but optional errands can fit between dungeons in different orders. Avoid treating every detour as a mandatory step in the story route.

Keep optional activities on a separate checklist
Secret Seashells
A Zelda Wiki page says none of the 50 Secret Seashells in the Switch version are missable. You can exchange them at the Seashell Mansion for rewards, including the Seashell Sensor; Nintendo’s tips describe the mansion and its rewards. If you have not found a shell in an area, keep it on your checklist and revisit rather than restarting your save.
Fishing, bottles, and other discoveries
Nintendo notes that fishing can earn rupees and may yield a Fairy Bottle. The same tips point to a secret in the Mabe Village library that can be revealed with the Pegasus Boots. These are useful side objectives, not prerequisites for collecting the eight Instruments.

The trading sequence
The trading sequence sends you among island characters, exchanging one item for another. Follow each handoff in order and check back as story progress opens the next stage; Nintendo Life’s trading-sequence guide lists the items and locations. Keep this chain on your completion checklist, but the sources do not establish it as a permanently missable chain.
Chamber Dungeons and figurines
If you are pursuing a broad completion checklist, include Chamber Stones and figurines as their own categories. The Switch walkthrough PDF includes both, and notes that its final Chamber Stone comes after beating the game. That is a reason to keep exploring after the story finale if you want those rewards, not a reason to delay the main ending.

Protect a no-death run from the shop consequence
If you are aiming for the special no-death ending, do not steal from the Town Tool Shop. Game8’s Switch remake guide warns that returning to the shop after stealing causes the shopkeeper to kill Link. This is a risk to the no-death condition, not a lost key item or a normal story softlock.

What to do if you think you missed something
- For a blocked route: note its location and return after earning another dungeon item.
- For a missed Secret Seashell: keep checking your remaining locations; Switch references say all 50 can still be collected.
- For an unresolved NPC request: review remembered conversations and revisit the character as the trading sequence progresses.
- After the finale: use your chosen checklist to pursue remaining completion goals, including the postgame Chamber Stone noted in the walkthrough.
- For a specific 100% target: define the categories you mean. The evidence supporting recoverability here covers Secret Seashells and broad completion activity; it does not establish that every optional scene, event, or record is recoverable.
