For better Xbox Cloud Gaming performance, connect by Ethernet if your device supports it; otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, move closer to the router, and close unnecessary background tabs. Then check your connection against Xbox’s recommendations and confirm that your browser and device are supported. Meeting a speed recommendation helps, but it does not guarantee low lag or a sharp picture.
1. Improve the connection between your device and router
Use Ethernet when possible
Xbox recommends a wired Ethernet connection where your device supports one. A cable avoids relying on the wireless link between the device and router. If you are playing on a phone or another device without a suitable Ethernet connection, skip this step rather than treating a wired setup as a requirement.
If you use Wi-Fi, choose 5 GHz
Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless play. On a dual-band router, check the device’s Wi-Fi settings to make sure it has actually joined the 5 GHz network; being near a router that supports 5 GHz does not itself confirm which band the device is using. Try playing closer to the router as well. Microsoft lists both 5 GHz Wi-Fi and proximity to the router among its cloud-gaming setup advice (Microsoft Edge: How to Speed Up Cloud Gaming).
2. Check your connection speed against Xbox’s guidance
Xbox’s cloud gaming page gives different recommended speeds by device class:

These figures come from Xbox’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming page (accessed October 4, 2026). Separately, Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 getting-started guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming across device choices (Xbox Wire: Getting Started with Xbox Cloud Gaming). Treat the figures as recommendations, not guarantees: a speed test measures only one aspect of the connection, and a result above the suggested speed does not ensure smooth play, low input delay, or consistent image quality.
3. Reduce avoidable local competition
On a browser-based setup, close tabs you do not need and retest. Microsoft includes closing unnecessary background tabs among its general cloud-gaming troubleshooting suggestions (Microsoft Edge: How to Speed Up Cloud Gaming). This is a useful check, not a guaranteed fix: poor performance can persist even when the browser is less busy.

4. Confirm that your browser and device are supported
Xbox’s cloud gaming page lists supported browsers including Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari. Compatibility and service availability can vary by device and location, so consult the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page for your specific setup rather than assuming every browser or device works.
5. Match the fix to the symptom
If controls feel delayed or play freezes
Focus on the connection path and local conditions: try Ethernet if available, confirm 5 GHz Wi-Fi if wireless, move nearer to the router, and close unnecessary tabs. Xbox notes that performance can vary with the connection, user location, device, and other factors. If the connection meets the recommendations but streaming remains poor, those other factors may matter; a higher speed-test result alone cannot identify or fix them.

If the picture looks soft in Microsoft Edge
Clarity Boost is a visual-quality feature for Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft describes it as client-side scaling intended to improve image sharpness (Microsoft Edge: Clarity Boost; Xbox Wire: Clarity Boost with Xbox Cloud Gaming on Edge). It may be worth trying when the issue is a soft-looking picture on a supported Edge setup, but it is not a network setting and is not established as a remedy for input lag, freezes, or an unstable connection.

After changing the connection, Wi-Fi band, position, or browser workload, try a session again and note whether the problem is responsiveness, freezing, or picture clarity. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell which local adjustment helped. If none does, Xbox’s stated factors—including location and device—mean the cause may not be something a local setting can resolve.
