How to save your game
- While playing, press + to open the in-game menu.
- Press L or R until you reach the System screen.
- Select Save.
- Choose the save file you want to use and confirm. The game has three save files, according to launch-era guides from IGN and GameSpot.
How to resume from a save
When you return to the game, use its load option and choose the file you saved. The guides above describe loading from the preceding menu. Select the same file you used when saving so you continue the intended playthrough.
Does suspending the game save your progress?
For a deliberate save you can select later, use the in-game Save command rather than relying on suspending the software from the Switch HOME menu. Nintendo’s general guidance for games that require manual saves is to save before closing the software; it does not describe this game’s specific suspend or autosave behavior. Where is the save data stored?
Nintendo says Switch game save data is stored in the console’s System Memory, not on a microSD card. Archiving or deleting the downloaded game does not delete its save data, so you can download the software again and resume using the save on that console. Optional: back up or restore a save with Nintendo Switch Online
Link’s Awakening supports Save Data Cloud, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the service. Check the game’s cloud status and the relevant user account when moving to another console; do not assume a backup has already synced. Nintendo says automatic save-data backup is enabled by default when a membership starts, but automatic save-data download must be enabled separately on each console. Not all software supports these automatic features. Details are on Nintendo’s save-data backup support page and the game’s official listing.
Be careful when restoring: downloading a cloud backup replaces the existing console save for that game, and Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. Check which version is newer before downloading a backup. Follow Nintendo’s restore instructions.

Which version does this apply to?
This procedure is for the Nintendo Switch remake, released September 20, 2019. Nintendo’s update page lists version 1.1.0, released June 3, 2025, adding Switch 2 display optimization and HDR support; Nintendo says saved data remains available after the update. The update concerns display features and does not change the save steps. See Nintendo’s version 1.1.0 notes.
