If you want fast movement, weapon-focused combat, and arena matches after DOOM: The Dark Ages, start with Xonotic for a free classic-style arena FPS. Choose Diabotical for short 1v1 or 2v2 rounds, Quake III Arena for familiar modes and offline bots, or Unreal Tournament 2004 for a broad legacy mode selection. The right pick depends on whether you want solo practice, quick duels, or a particular online community.
Which arena shooter should you play after DOOM: The Dark Ages?
| Game | Best fit | Access and platforms documented by the cited page | Offline play and activity caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xonotic | Free classic arena movement, varied weapons, and traditional modes | Free to play and modify; downloads for Linux, Windows, and macOS | Official site shows live player and game counters, which are a snapshot rather than a promise of a match in your region or at your play time. |
| Diabotical | Compact 1v1/2v2 rounds and a broad mode menu | Epic Games Store lists it as free-to-play; the page describes it as a multiplayer FPS. | The reviewed page describes online queues and modes but does not establish current queue populations. |
| Quake III Arena | Classic tournament, free-for-all, team, and CTF play, including bot matches | Xbox listing includes PC play; console online multiplayer requires a separately sold Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate tier. Check the current regional listing. | Offline single-player against AI-controlled bots is listed. |
| Unreal Tournament 2004 | A wide mix of classic team and free-for-all modes | Epic’s franchise page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux; it does not establish present-day commercial availability. | Epic says it no longer develops the franchise; community developers and fans maintain servers for some versions, but activity is not guaranteed. |
Best free starting point for classic arena movement: Xonotic
Xonotic is the most direct fit if what you want is a traditional arena FPS rather than a hero shooter or a team-based spin on the genre. Its official site describes crisp movement, a wide array of weapons, and modes such as Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Clan Arena, Nexball, Freeze Tag, and multiplayer race. That range makes it a good first download whether you want straightforward fragging or a more objective-focused match.
The official site offers downloads for Linux, Windows, and macOS, and states that the game is free to play and modify under GPLv3+. It also displays player and game counters. Check those when you plan to play, but treat them as a changing snapshot: they do not guarantee players in your region or a populated server at a particular hour.
Best for quick 1v1 or 2v2 matches: Diabotical
Diabotical is a strong choice if you want a compact round-based contest rather than a large arena free-for-all. Its Epic Games Store page describes Aim Arena as a 1v1 or 2v2 mode on compact maps: each player begins with a full loadout and has two lives per round. That setup puts the emphasis on aim, positioning, and using the weapons available in the round.

The store page lists Diabotical as free-to-play and describes more than 15 modes and 30 maps, along with ranked solo and team queues. It also highlights Wipeout, MacGuffin, and Wee-Bow Instagib. These are the page’s feature descriptions, not a guarantee that a queue will be active when you log in; the page does not establish current matchmaking population.
Best classic pick for offline bots: Quake III Arena
Quake III Arena, originally released in 1999, remains a useful choice if you want the classic arena structure and the option to practice offline. The Xbox listing describes a multiplayer-focused FPS with Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Tournament (1v1), and Capture the Flag, plus offline single-player matches against AI-controlled bots. It lists 35 arenas and multiplayer for up to 16 players.

The platform and access details need a check before buying: the listing includes PC play, while console online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, sold separately. Store availability, pricing, supported platforms, and subscription terms can vary by region and change over time, so confirm them on the current listing.
Best for a wider classic mode mix: Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 2004 suits players who want more than one familiar arena format. Epic’s franchise page describes ten modes spanning team-based and free-for-all play, and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is a legacy option, not a current Epic live service: Epic says it no longer develops the franchise. The same page notes that servers for some versions remain active through community developers and fans who provide patches and maintenance.

Rocket Arena is adjacent to the genre but plays differently from the classic arena FPS picks above. EA describes it as a 3v3 online hero shooter built around rockets, knockback, and rocket-jumping mechanics. EA’s page links to a “Rocket Arena Sunset Announcement” dated December 13, 2023, but the reviewed page does not establish whether play is currently available. Do not rely on it as an online destination without first checking current service status.

How to choose for your setup and play style
- For classic free arena mechanics on desktop: try Xonotic first, then check its live counters close to the time you intend to play.
- For short duels: Diabotical’s Aim Arena is the clearest match for 1v1 or 2v2 rounds, but check whether its online queues suit your region and schedule.
- For solo practice: Quake III Arena explicitly lists offline matches against bots. Confirm the right platform and any console subscription requirement before purchasing.
- For variety in classic modes: Unreal Tournament 2004 lists ten modes, but plan around community-maintained rather than Epic-maintained play.
- For online multiplayer in any of these games: activity is time- and region-dependent. Available product pages do not establish reliable current matchmaking populations across every option.
