NYT Connections game #472 was the Wednesday, September 25, 2024 puzzle. Here are the category hints first, followed by the full spoiler answer key. The trickiest overlap is ROLLER: it belongs with the room-painting supplies, not the “___ DERBY” group.

Hints for Connections #472

Try these category-level clues before looking at the words in each group:

  • Four kinds of sports achievements.
  • Four things used to paint a room.
  • Foods whose names are associated with cities.
  • Familiar phrases that end with “DERBY.”

NYT Connections answers for September 25, 2024

Spoilers below: the four groups and their words are listed in full.

Yellow: Trio of sports achievements

Green: Needs for painting a room

Blue: Food named after cities

Purple: ___ DERBY

DEMOLITION, HOME RUN, KENTUCKY, SOAP BOX.

Why ROLLER is easy to misread

ROLLER can bring “roller derby” to mind, which makes it look like a possible fit for the purple category. In this board, though, it is grouped with DROP CLOTH, PAINT, and TAPE as a room-painting need. The purple answers are the phrases that complete “___ DERBY.”

How Connections works

The daily board has 16 words to sort into four groups of four. Submit a group when you think its words share a connection; four incorrect guesses end the game. You can play on the NYT website or in the NYT Games app. These are the mechanics reported for the game, not statistics specific to puzzle #472.
