If your monitor says “No Signal,” “No Input Signal,” or stays blank when you turn on a PS4, start by checking the selected HDMI input and the connection—not by resetting the console. Work through the HDMI path first, then try Sony’s Safe Mode resolution reset. The message alone cannot tell you whether the problem is the cable, monitor, settings, or console.
1. Check power and select the correct monitor input
Turn on both the PS4 and monitor. Use the monitor’s input/source button or on-screen display (OSD) to select the exact HDMI port the console is plugged into. A monitor set to a different HDMI port—or to DisplayPort—will show no picture even when the PS4 is on. Monitor menus vary; BenQ’s input-selection guidance illustrates choosing HDMI through the OSD.
2. Check the HDMI connection and remove intermediaries
The PS4 sends video from its HDMI OUT port. Connect that port to an HDMI input on the monitor, and make sure both plugs are firmly seated. Sony’s PS4 picture and sound troubleshooting recommends checking the HDMI connection and, while diagnosing, connecting the console directly to the display.
Temporarily bypass a receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device, or other equipment. A direct connection removes those links from the signal path so you can tell whether one of them is involved.

3. Try another HDMI input and cable
If the monitor has another HDMI input, connect the PS4 there and select that input in the monitor menu. If possible, test with a cable that you know works. Sony advises: “If possible, try using a different HDMI cable.” For a replacement, Sony specifies a compatible High Speed HDMI or Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Testing another cable helps isolate the cause; it does not guarantee that the cable is the problem.
4. Reset the PS4’s display resolution in Safe Mode
If the PS4 still produces no image during normal startup, use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution option. Sony says this option restarts the PS4 at 480p and can help with a blank screen.

- Turn the PS4 fully off; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Select Change Resolution. The console restarts at 480p; once you have a picture, adjust the display settings as needed.
These steps follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions for PS4 and PS5. Do not start with Initialize PS4 or Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software): Sony lists these among Safe Mode options, and they delete user data.
5. If you have a PS4 Pro connected to a 4K display, check HDCP
This branch applies to PS4 Pro, not the base PS4. For 4K games or streaming, HDCP 2.2 support may matter across the entire display chain, including any receiver or other intermediary. Sony documents an HDCP 1.4 option for a 4K display that does not support HDCP 2.2. On PS4 Pro, choose Set HDCP Mode in Safe Mode and select HDCP 1.4; Sony cautions that this may limit video output to 1080p. See Sony’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR setup guide and its Safe Mode instructions.

For a compatible PS4 Pro 4K setup that still has a resolution problem, Sony’s setup guide describes an advanced sequence: use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution option to select 2160p – YUV420, then return HDCP Mode to Automatic. The available choices depend on the display and the capabilities of every device in the HDMI chain.

Once you have tried the basic connection checks and resolution reset, test each device with another known-working device or display. These swaps help narrow down the fault, but a no-signal message by itself does not prove that a port or console has failed.

- PS4 on another HDMI display: If it works, check the original monitor’s selected input, manual, and compatibility settings.
- Another HDMI source on the monitor: If that source also fails, check the monitor’s input selection and settings.
- PS4 fails on multiple displays with a known-working cable: Follow Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostics rather than concluding from the message alone that the PS4’s HDMI port is damaged.
